My D2 (4U1826) is missing the upper rollers.  Were these likely removed by a previous owner or were some units built without them?

my 1938 3J 1920 D2 has no load rollers on it, 4 track rollers only, check for mounts you will know then if factory fitted or not.

I have read that they were an option. I have a D2 with them and one without them. Since D2s seem to last forever, I doubt that they make a lot of difference, but it makes the machine look better. (IMHO) Grant.

Top rollers on D2s are very rare here in the UK.
They were an optional extra and presumably due to WW2 shortages very few if any arrived on these shores with top rollers.

On the early 4U D2s the track carrier roller was an option, the later 4Us it was standard, I have an early one that has the upper roller 4U1098SPG, maybe that is what the SPG is for.

Added track weight is a consideration.....
