Stuck steerting clutches on D47U

I found a D47U with less than 1000 hours that had been sitting so long all the paint was off it.  Someone stripped the pinion gear and flywheel ring and parked it.  The problem is that the steering clutch housing was full of water and the clutches are obviously badly stuck,  A friend suggested filling the housing with kerosene, letting it sit for a month, removing the rear plate and hitting the clutch with a  heavy hammer and a 2X4.  Has anyone had any success with anything like this or does anyone have suggestions other than the standard ways to break them apart,  I really want to avoid removing them, thanks.

diesel works fine. i would add a few quarts of atf also.   before you add the diesel try riding the brake to heat the drum up.
