I think the only proper fix for this is to remove the head and check the depth of the valve seats and the length of the valves.
Otherwise if you have had the machine for three years and the decomp has not been working in that time has it caused any issues?

Rome - the adjusting screw position in the picture is where it was when removed. All 8 valves are similar. Phil - agree on the proper fix, but for now I'll either attempt one of Eddie's fixes or live with it. I'm able to start it without decompression, but lately the pinion clutch as started to slip a little when I engage the pinion in gear, and I'm trying to avoid ruining the pinion clutches. Thanks for your advice guys.

I think your easiest route at this point Bruce is to measure the gap between the all of the buttons and the decompressor shaft, when it is in the not-decompressed position. Find the smallest of this set of measurements, subtract 0.125 from it, then order valve stem caps that add at least that height to the valve stem. You can get them ground down if you need a few thou. That's the simplest fix, and if it's an Eddie B approved solution, you know it will work : ). Better than removing the head, better than trying to knock the buttons out, and those caps probably only cost a few bucks each and are very easy to install

Cheers,

Sounds like a good "temporary fix" for now.
