D2 engine side panel patterns was created by d2gary
This is directed at neil to start off but if there's enough interest I would be willing to loan them to the club.
I was trying to get measurements for Neil to reproduce side panels but after trying several times it's pretty obvious that it's not going to be possible for me to get enough accurate measurements to make it happen. So I'm willing to ship the 2 side panels that I have to Neil for patterns with the condition that they be passed on to the next member who needs them.
Neil let me know if you're interested and maybe we can get these passed around for everyone to use.

Hi Scott, that is a generous offer, don't forget you guys Stateside have Scott Flint in California making top class sheet metal for all the old Cats, he has invested over $100,000 of his own money setting up his workshop with all the tooling and dies for the Cats, and I hear all his customers have been very happy with his work.
Obviously his parts are not free, but the prices I've heard suggest he is not charging much, relative to the higher prices for steel we all see now, you might remember the story I wrote for the ACMOC mag about visiting Scott in 2019, he's a really nice guy, and impressed me, just his timber shipping cases were works of art.

I was about to say yes please, but let me check with Scott Flint first what items he makes. If it turns out he doesn't have what I need (wife says "want" : ), then let's chat. I was thinking a while back that actually if the main bends were put in place, it would be fine to not take the measurements for the holes, because if I added the holes with the part in situ, they'd be spot on. My fender holes don't line up exactly and that's from Cat original parts that were already on the machine. What are your thoughts on that approach? Would that make measuring easier? If it wouldn't, no problem, we can figure out next steps.

Cat has drawings available for most "obsolete parts" and might have the drawings for the side panels. I have obtained several drawings from Cat to fabricate obsolete parts and although they supposedly charge for the drawings, my dealer has given them to me free.

Hey Neil, I think the biggest problem isn't just the bend its the curves and recessed features that are stamped in. Wouldn't be impossible to fabricate them but would be hard for the average Joe to do without a good pattern for direct comparison. I'm sure there's guys that could do it from drawings. I'm not the guy to do the drawings or fabricate from the drawings.
If someone is reproducing the panels I would say its money well spent. If not my "experienced" panels are available

Hi Neil, can you please let us know what you find out from Scott, I have no idea what he charges for his parts, so it would be interesting to see a price list, he was making nice new pilot motor fuel tanks too I remember from my visit.

The side panels for a "U" series are basically flat panels with a bend top and bottom... the panels for the "J" series are more complex because they have a curve built in at the radiator end. And yes, Scott Flint has made the ones for the "J" series.
