The first 983s the 38Ks had the D343 engine in them and the 58X 983B SN came out in 1978 but can,t remember if they still had the D343 or possibly the 3406 as my book doesn,t say but I should remember as I was working at the dealer at that time but you know how your memory leaves you with age.Just looked further in my SNID book and the 58X did use the 3406 engine the 70V in them and the 58X came out in 1978 it says.
You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.
Hi, Martyn.
A lovely old beast, and she looks in good nick too. Thanks for sharing.
They're handy to have around. Here's mine lifting a dead 977 20A that went to the scrappers.![]()

The running gear is D8 based, this machine I think came from Italy.
Rolly Billings made a great Video of this machine at work a few months back

This was the ACMOC chapter 2 working day at Russ Saywells place at St Neots Cambridgeshire.
Machine info--- Cat D343,275 HP 14.6 ltr engine 5 cu yd bucket, weight must be around 25/30 ton.
We owned two of these machines over the years. The first one had some major cooling problems. If you looked at it on a very hot day it seemed to over heat. The secord one had a better cooling but the final drives wouldn't hold up. If you want to see a real machine we had two of the Komastu D155S tracked loader they made. Now that was a real beast. It had a 6.5 yard bucket and all the power you needed. Mike Durkin
Info I have shows:
38K series with D343T, 275 hp and 75,980 lbs.
58X series with 3406T, 275 hp and 78,530 lbs.
Serious "beast"😊 😊
I was going by what the Cat Sales serial number ID book shows and that the 58X used the 3406 engine but I can,t be sure if the book is right or not and I just can,t remember for sure what they had in them as we sold very few of all of them. I do emember for sure the first ones did have the D343 in them.
Hi SJ,
Looked again.....the 8 is a 6.....it's my eyes🙄 🙄 on that fine print.
