Hi Scott, welcome to the forum. I thought there was a serial # reference in the store on this site but I don't see it listed. Perhaps someone might know if ACMOC has a publication. In any case, I picked up a serial # reference from Cat from online a few years ago so they're available. I have publication SEBF9451-30 dated March 2004. You can order the publication from catpublications.com
Regarding tooling, ACMOC has a fuel valve wrench that enables you to shut off the two valves on the fuel tank (the drain and the outlet). Cat has the injection pump bleeder tool, which is a 1/4 drive socket that fits over the 1/4 bleeder screw. A couple of folks on here have the track wear gauge. Other specialized OEM tooling like hydraulic pullers are uncommon but it's easy to adapt modern tooling to suit. For example, I had a machinist turn down a couple of adapters (basically just donuts and bushings of specific sizing so very easy to make) that worked with my cheap online hollow ram cylinder and so was able to push and pull all the hubs and sprockets on my D2 (up to 20 tons). Beyond those sorts of things, most Cat fasteners are 3/8 UNC bolts /nuts so you can go a long way with just a 9/16" wrench. I use the ratcheting combination wrench like you can get from Lowes and that makes undoing things very fast. There are some fasteners that Cat has hidden very well so you need long 1/4 extensions and 1/4 to 3/8 adapters and things like that but you'll figure that out as you go along. And some things just need triple jointed fingers : ) As always, just ask here if you get stuck. Someone inevitably knows the answer or an easy way to do something.
Cheers,
Neil

I thought I had read somewhere that the BOD was looking into re-issuing the serial number book. It may be related to the serial number book for Road graders. Maybe that is just wishful thinking.

one point to remember most fastners and fittings on old cat gear are SAE. so the pipe fittings will be npt and nps if your machine has been outside the states some one may have barstadised it with withworth fittings and fastners they may look similar but are not the main difference is the angle of the thread sae is 60deg whitworth is 55deg.
when reassembling just about anything copper or nickel anti-seize is your friend just a dab will save a lot of hassle later.
here's a tip dont bother trying get the grease fittings except from cat the price is very cheap from cat. i paid 7.50AUD each compared to 20 bucks from a hose & fittings joint.
rough rule on cat parts common stuff that's still used today or on later machines is cheap less common parts are more expensive. to use the cat parts look up add a couple of zeros after the first 2 charcters in the original part no since they know use 8 character part no's if the original doesn't show up try adding the extra zero or too.
