I am now the proud owner of a machine with some need of a little love but it does run and is functional ... for the most part.

I have the D4 7U books for the tractor and engine/transmission and I have a copy of the jensales operator manual but I noticed some controls / processes are not the same with this tractor. The pinion controls are different, the starting process and then different, and the location of the poney controls are also different.

I uploaded some photos to my flickr account to share these differences  flic.kr/s/aHsmVjGBmn
When i get a chance I will post some video of the start process but basically pull the lever ball lower left all the way out to turn the main motor over and then switch the compression release to run. Rest seems about the same less there are two petcocks to turn on the fuel (T10584 fuel shutoff as well as the normal petcock for the pony)

There are some "guides" missing from the rollers (inside if I recall) but will have to wait till I can clean it off really good to see what is going on there ... a piece of one of the roller guides was even in the track upon delivery that I thought was a stick till I went to remove it and found it was a nice round chunk of metal. It wouldn't be the first one to come off it seems.

More details to follow in the future but if you want extra pictures let me know ...

OH Question:
This thing has an extra link arm for the flywheel clutch ... the machine has difficulty shifting into three positions and I was wondering if this would need adjusting to allow it to slide in more easily but I haven't even taken anything appart to know what it does or doesn't do. Late D47U with in seat starting is all you have. The other linkage on the clutch lever is a shift interlock to keep from shifting with the clutch engaged. Push the clutch lever all the way forward and try shifting.

Oh wow! All of the goodies I lust after! In seat start, five roller frame, winch, 2 speed reverse, one VERY unique D4! Tell us the history please. Thanks for sharing. JM

I will ask the guy I bought it off of if he knows if the previous owner to him knew anything about its past. If I recall that owner welded the ROPS onto the machine with some scrap he got from taking a building down but beyond that and what it was used for in its last project I don't know anything about its history. The last owner used it for about 100 hours to put in a pond and do some earth works on his property.

The "in seat" starting threw me for a loop since the manual I downloaded didn't have instructions with the pull cable but I was able to piece together the proper starting procedure with the book and the previous owners instructions.

Right now one the HR, 1, 2 are the easy to get into gear ... I got it into LR once by acident and have yet to get it into 3 or 4 ... thought maybe it was the shift interlock as Kracked1 pointed out needing adjusting ... no clue, I am ok with what works right now :D

Current known issues:
  1. petcock for pony leaks when on
  2. you have to drain fuel from the fuel shutoff after stopping the pony to prevent it from ending up in the crank case, this also leaks when "off"
  3. anti-freeze leak from poney after running
  4. several roller internal sides missing (with the last one breaking on delivery 0__0 ) ... seems to function without them but ...
  5. 4 way blade drops to left ... didn't run it too long and haven't looked into why yet ... hoses could use some love
  6. steering clutches seem uneven (both "work")
  7. brakes seem uneven (both "work" just the left less so)
  8. two missing plates where I think the adjustments for steering clutches are under the seat
  9. small leaks ... everywhere ... wont really know till I clean it really good
  10. one bent track pad
  11. track pins have slight wear
  12. pistons (I assume for track adjustment) look like the covers were ripped back on both sides at some point ...
  13. wench is missing controls but I was told works. The lever on top is tied off right now to keep it from moving.
  14. some pony motor wires could use some love
  15. seat is surprisingly useable despite the springs sticking up out of the ripped fabric (comfy to)
  16. gear shifting issues previously mentioned
I am sure there is more I haven't seen yet ... this machine will be used to do the earth works on our property for the next year or two then we will re-evaluate if we still need it or not.

I think that extra hydraulic pump is mounted to the still-extant generator. The generator still appears to have its brush end-plate with wiring attached to the visible regulator. I could be wrong but that's what I think I see. Which means that's a very interesting retrofit and I'd love to know what was done to create that. I'm guessing the generator backing plate is original but the field coil body has been shorted up and/or the armature has been replaced by a non-generating shaft that is longer to extend out the back so the pump can be coupled to it. Just a guess

Cheers,
Neil

When I am at the property next I will take some more detailed pictures of the generator / hydro setup so you can figure out what the previous owners may have done. Not sure if external pictures will help or not but that is all I can provide for now.

Looks like hoses head to a tilt cylinder on the right side and linkage from valve mounted beside engine to the second control lever.

I added some more pictures from the sale of the machine to the previously linked album. The aux hyrdo circuit goes over the top of the machine, through some pipe welded on to the blade, then into the left hand side tilt piston.
