The circuit breaker and heat/start switch should be on the negative side of ammeter and the alternator, lights should be on the positive side of the ammeter. Most likely the switch got rewired incorrectly.

Thank you Rome and Old Magnet. Although I am not a fan of wiring diagrams, it gave me a better idea of what I am dealing with. Just like Rome, I too have had ex’s that were not wired quite right.
Thru process of elimination, turns out the lead for the lights was incorrect, as it was on the negative side of things.
Thanks to you gentlemen and this site, I have solved my issue. Now I can find time to worry about other things.
As some say, if I didn’t take a picture, it likely didn’t happen!
