Good day everyone: I am working on my new to me, not so "old" D4E 29X00827. The original ammeter did not work. I assumed it was broken. I got a new (not factory) copycat ammeter installed, and it does not work either. Needle does not move...
I am getting 27.1 volts on both sides per my tester; The reset button side (-) is putting out voltage as well.
I compared to the wiring on some of my D series, and everything looks the same.
Any pointers here? What am I doing wrong? Or did I just by fluke get a "dud" from Brand X?
I do not have a wiring diagram for this tractor. Curious as the start switch had been replaced. Wondering if wired incorrectly.
How does one go about to test an ammeter? Probably the dumbest question asked, but obviously something is amiss somewhere.
Any help would be appreciated. TIA JM

The circuit breaker and heat/start switch should be on the negative side of ammeter and the alternator, lights should be on the positive side of the ammeter. Most likely the switch got rewired incorrectly.

Thanks Rome: It is a bit of a "plumbers Nightmare" under the dash. I should rewire things to tidy up. On the D4Ds, I only saw wire from circuit breaker to negative side... so I need to chase the wires down at the actual switch.
Wiring diagram sounds like a must.
Thanks again. JM

Thank you Rome and Old Magnet. Although I am not a fan of wiring diagrams, it gave me a better idea of what I am dealing with. Just like Rome, I too have had ex’s that were not wired quite right.
Thru process of elimination, turns out the lead for the lights was incorrect, as it was on the negative side of things.
Thanks to you gentlemen and this site, I have solved my issue. Now I can find time to worry about other things.
As some say, if I didn’t take a picture, it likely didn’t happen!
