Hi, Ray54.
Nope, no older folks keeping anything in rope corrals. AND, if you putchyer readin' glasses on, you might notice that the there is a second chain spool on the tuther side just visible over the middle of the seat back.
And there was NO, "WOO, WOO" or "WHOA, WHOA" when I was learning, especially not these days even though I am STILL learning.
Just my 0.02.
You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Hi, Folks.
What is sticking out the driver's window is a head and an upper body of what appears to be a man - - - although, in this day and age, WHO knows???????????????????????????????
Here izza photo of a day that I suspect those involved would rather have forgotten.

I figured the drive was checking to see if he could open the door if he wished to jump at some point in the trip if the brakes would fail. I have driven some old trucks were the only way to open the door is the outside handle.
I need better glasses Deas, I see what could be chain were you are telling me. But looks to me that it is just to keep the box closed the same as the box in the other seat. But what the heck they even have a 4x4 or bigger block on the tail end to stop sliding off the back as well as the sides.

Hi, Ray54.
I don't think the DOT was around so much back in those days and maybe he thought he could get away with all the 'sins' that we are noticing. Bet he never thought there would be a bunch of armchair inspectors scrutinizing his load nearly NINETY YEARS later.

Hi, D4Jim.
That photo has been on here before but quite a while back. I wouldn't swear to it but I seem to remember that he did it to be able to move his D2 around on his ownsome - back it on over the front, connect it all up and "Home' James."
