A MK truck carrying a Caterpillar breaks through a bridge over a canal on Collister. Spectators (mostly children) crowd the scene.

I have this photo also of this equipment either responding or coming from the Tehachapi Flood of 1932 above Bakersfield Ca. I have also seen a picture of the cat 60 with the no 43 on the tank with a line atached to a steam locomotive atemptingg to move it on a newely contracted track. This flash flood in the desert mountains above washed out the railroad grade completely buring entire trains including the huge steam locomotives of the era. Two trains had stopped at the top of the canyon with crews taking refuge in a small cafe near the tracks when a wall of water hit oblivating the cafe and erybody inside. The loss of life estamated at near 100 including a roqad maintance crew working further down stream plus an estimated 60 tranciants riding the rails. The flood underminded the tracks completley buring the trains some of which required exploritory excavation to be located. What a huge effort given the equipment of the time.

Bridges certainly were not made to carry heavy machines in those early days !
I wonder how they manged to recover it.

Hi, gauntjoh.
I think I can tell you how they would have recovered it - - - - - - - - - - - with GREAT difficulty. I don't think Liebherr or Lampson were building 2,000 ton cranes back in the day.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Probably cut the bridge supports off and deck and pulled it backwards with another steamer or a team of horses.
