D330 Turbo leaking oil tinto intake

Hello All
The turbo on my D330 in my 944 is leaking oil into the intake causing the engine to smoke. I am worried that it could cause a runaway engine but so far the engine runs fine and shuts down straightaway without any run on. As the engine is out of a 950 it has the 3S4415 turbo on it which takes the 3S7577 cartridge. The parts manual does not show any seals on the shaft. There is a 9M8919 ring in behind the impeller on the turbine side is that what seals it? Is it possible to reseal a turbo or should I be looking at a new cartridge? A new aftermarket cartridge will cost over $1000. Cat don't list that cartridge anymore. I tested the shaft play as per the 944 manual and it passed but it was only a very basic test.

Hi Phil,
indeed it is only the piston ring type seals that hold the oil in the cartridge of most Diesel engine turbos.
Petrol/gas engines that have inlet manifold vacuum need a refrigeration type seal to stop oil being forced into their inlets.
From this you will deduce that a blocked--too small an air cleaner can cause oil to be forced into the inlet compressor wheel side.
From the Dyno. Testing Caterpillar Engines Special Instructions sheets we are given 15" of H2O (water) restriction as the maximum allowed--however from a SI for an Engine Evaluation Test Box we are given 30" H2O as the max. restriction--obviously the lower the better.
The turbos can be rebuilt but for most small turbos it is more economical and quicker for production machinery to go the Reman route.
Any decent turbo shop should be able to rebuild it.

Thanks for the reply. The leak has gotten worse although the engine still runs the same. I am hoping it is because the engine has been doing a lot of idling while I have been positioning house frame panels. The oil on the side of the engine, I assume is coming from the exhaust side due to the blackness of the oil but 2 weeks ago I had the intake off to check the head bolt tension and there was oil in the intake after the turbo.
It is interesting your comment about the intake vacuum as this has the original 944 air cleaner. The later model 944 had the same air cleaner as the 950.

Here is the Jib I built for lifting the frames into position. Includes a 10ft fly jib.

The machine has hardly been above idle for the last week or so, but only runs an hour or so a day.
I need to get a few more days out of it before I can bring it back to where I can work on it.

Hi Phil,
That's a very professional looking crane jib you have there.
I'm not familiar with that type of house construction, presumably the panels bolt together. What are they clad with on the outside and inside ?
It must make for a very rapid completion time.

Hello Gauntjoh
The panels are made of rolled sheet metal to form metal studs etc. They are very quick to put together and to lift into position. Normally they are supplied assembled but I got mine in a big flat pack.
Normal cladding with whatever you like can be used. I will be using fiber cement boards on the outside and drywall on the inside.
The biggest selling point for me is "Termite Proof".
