My father has had this for a couple of years, he had bought it from someone else. Well he sold it to group that helps people in poor rural areas that I happen to be a manager in. The info he has given me is useless as it has been incorrect. He has done little maintanance on it so I have a lot of work ahead of me.

My main question for today, what year is this and is it a #12? I have not had luck finding much info on this model number. Thanks for the help.

Looks like to me, there is the top part of a 7 in front of the zero which would be a 70D 2249 # 12 grader. That would make it about a mid 1958 build. If that is not a 7, I've never heard of a 0D grader. Look at the number in front of that 0 and see what it is for sure. catskinner

Yes its a 70. so a 1958? Should help narrow things down. I need to figure out where to buy new gaskets and seals for it. It has more leaks than Wiki.

Thank you again!

The 70D/71D #12 graders replaced the 8T series in the late 1950’s. Late 8T and all 70/71s have an oil clutch for improved service life. The interesting part is that unlike the tractors, the grader oil clutch uses/shares the engine oil. The engine oil pump has a section that supplies oil to the clutch to cool and lubricate it. The system seems to work fine and was continued in the 99E series that came along about 1960.

Engine in the 70D is a version of the D318 6 cylinder developing around 100 hp. As used in the oil clutch graders, the D318 has some differences in the block and oil pan from the versions used in tractors and power units for cranes, draglines etc. but most of the other parts are the same. I think the 70D is the pony start version and the 71D is the direct electric start version.

You really need a parts book and an operators instruction book. Keep a lookout on eBay for one that covers your model and serial number.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Would this work? It says "for Gasoline Starting" though..

Yes it should be correct for your grader

Doesn’t yours have a gasoline pony motor?

Even if it’s been converted to 24 volt direct electric start, it may have been done with CAT specified parts or could be generic aftermarket stuff, or even a 12 volt conversion like most folks would do today.

The signs of a full conversion are 24 volt starter and generator, hand priming pump on the fuel system and glow plugs in the precombustion chambers.

That does sound about right. It has an electric starter. I cant say I know much about older style engines. I can grasp the concepts pretty well I just dont know them yet.

Edit: It runs Diesel.

Hey,

So I got the parts book and serviceman's reference book. The person selling the operators guide can shove his price where he finds his books.
My question though, what kind of oil this Grader takes? I cannot find a reference to it anywhere in the books. I did manage to find a lot of other things though. So I got that going for me!

Thanks again!

If you are not particular about the quality of the manual, one is available from Jensales for $51. Photos are poor copies. Or get the pdf version downloaded for $37.

For engine oil I use 15 W 40 in my 1950 112 grader, same oil as in my green tractors. (Diesels)

I also use 15/40 in my 8t grader with a 318 engine.. Lots of sludge got washed out on first use it.
