Dirty Mag?

Dirty Mag? was created by 955H
The mag on the pup start on my D7-17A has quit sparking the plugs. I have checked to make sure that its not grounding out, it was working just fine, it supposed to have been gone through not too long ago. Someone suggested it might just need to be cleaned?......how do you clean a mag?..is it straight forward i.e disasemble and clean or does it need to be removed from the pup engine?

This has happened to me several times with a D2 and a 212 grader and it has always cured it by simply running a match book paper through the points. Hope you have some luck. Charlie

Can I just pop the cap so to speak and do that?

Yes, the points are accessible by removing the cover and rotor.......usually takes a more aggressive cleaning.......I use a point file and check continuity to see if cleaning was adequate. Have to lift the ground wire to get a reading.
Common problem.

Thankyou, what values should I see with the continuity test?

No value involved.....just a check to see if your conducting across the closed points. Can do the same thing with a test light. They are a little weird in that the whole system is grounded and you have to lift a wire to check....usually the one landed in the upper left hand corner when facing the cover.

Folding a piece of 1000 gritsand paper and draging it through the closed points 7 or so many times may do it. I don't think you have any major problem. Charlie

Some time ago I took the mag from my 2-U in to the Cat dealer and they put it on a machine that turned the mag as if it were in use. I had done all the point burnishing and had no spark. The mag worked good after that. This climate is very damp with condensation in the winter time. Now when I have a problem, I remove the spark plugs and re attach the wires so I can watch for spark, and turn the pony with a 1/2 electric drill motor. Works great and I don't have to remove the mag from the engine. Put the plugs back in and listen to that fine sound.

Thanks all, I didn't think it could be that complicated, alittle basic maintenance and I should have it firedup, my 955 is direct start so the mag issue was alittle intimidating when I first had the problem.
