I have been looking for a bigger farm Cat to call my own for the last 2+ years. Paid way more than I originally planned, but I drug home a 1971 D8 46A25696. Has less than 200 hours on a complete engine overhaul, completely new undercarriage and one new final drive at the same time - all Cat parts with receipts. Has a 13' 6" Balderson U-blade and parallelogram 3 shank ripper and a Kenco cab with heat and A/C. Overall a pretty tidy machine.

I have it in the shop going over it with a fine tooth comb, fixing a few oil leaks, changing all the filters and most of the fluids, checking transmission mounts, and getting the A/C hooked up and working. While it has had some good mechanical work done to it, the wiring is an atrocity that needs a lot of attention.

Just a few questions about it, mostly out of curiosity.

At some point around this serial number, I have heard that they changed injection pumps to the scroll style and upgraded final drives at the same time. What serial number was this? Any way to tell if the final drives are the upgraded version? 2 bolt vs 4 bolt filter cover? What was changed?

The reason I ask is I think my Cat is late enough to have the upgrades, but it has the old style pump, but I also found "17375" stamped in the lower left rear of the block, which makes me wonder if the engine has been swapped at some point...

Just looking to make sure in case I ever need to order engine or injection system parts.

Congratulations. I 'ackshully' preferred the later 8Hs over the K series 'cos the integrated steering systems on the Ks were not as 'user-friendly' as the later ones on the 8Ns and later.

I can already tell that I will enjoy it immensely. Quite the upgrade form the only dozer I have ever really spent time on - a direct drive D6C. I thought it was an easy to run Cat, but man, this D8H is much more balanced and way easier to keep the ground smooth while dozing.

Injection pump was changed at s/n 46A27801 and 46A28137-up.
Not sure what all was changed along the way finals wise but there were lots of FD case changes, latest being at s/n 46A30381-up where there were three case changes over (Type 1 to Type 4) finals.
All the FD filter covers are 4-bolt but the covers changed from raised flange to flat flange at s/n 46A17591.

Not sure what all was changed along the way finals wise but there were lots of FD case changes, latest being at s/n 46A30381-up where there were three case changes over (Type 1 to Type 4) finals.

Interesting. My final drive filter covers are flat flange, but they only have 2 bolts...

My misread, when the changed to flat flange at 17591 they changed to two bolts. Parts diagram call out was 4- bolts for two units.

That OUGHTA doowitt - should just about get yer turnips dug up - - - - if'n yer don't put too much fertiliser on 'em.

That blade has had some fairly serious resurfacing but overall it looks good. Thanks for sharing.
