Thanks OM. That is the way I set the fuel injector pump lifters. Now that everything is set and I watch the sequence all the lifters are doing the same thing in firing order sequence. It all makes sence now. If you injected the full amount of fuel into the cylinder at 25 degrees before TDC or even at TDC the motor would hammer bad. This is what lead me to believe the flywheel was off 120 degrees. No I didn't actually pull an injector and check with a dial indicator for TDC. This is a lesson learned. After working on a 4400 and a 4600 engine I have learned to check these things before the heads go on or check with a dial indicator. Actually I also had the valves set 120 degrees off to. Things are right now. I've got a bearing and seal to put in the bendix drive before the motor goes back in the tractor. It is a good time to pull the pony motor to get the clutch drive out while the main motor is out.

Glad to hear your on the road to recovery:) :) Can all become quite confusing if you get to many "what if's" going. They really are quite simple once things settle down.

The long injection stroke might make more sense if you remember that even at full fuel, the pump plunger moves even after fuel is no longer being injected. At anything less than full power, injection stops even quicker. The amount of fuel delivered is controlled by controlling the end of injection as the rack twists the pump plungers.

Glad you have it going together.
Hoping for some black smoke.:D

AT LAST SUCCESS ..This 63 year old motor came to life again. It will take some time to get the rings seated and everything broke in but at least it is running. Runs good, Sounds good, good fuel pressure and good oil pressure. I have a fuel leak around the base of the fuel injection pump assemblies and top of the injection pump housing. I replaced the 2A3895 fuel injection pump assemblies with the replacement part 8M9757 I used some o-rings purchased locally to seal around the base of the injector pump housing and the replacement pump assemblies. Can someone give me the part number for the correct seals that are used in the 8M9757 pump assemblies. These pump assemblies have a square base for the seal whereas the 2A3895 used a triangle shaped seal. Again Thanks to the members who gave their time and knowledge to help make an old caterpillar live again.

May have to check with Cat or your supply source for the pump seals on those replacements. The latest pumps that are shown in the parts manual use the 2A3307 seal. If you find the number, please post.

OM I think why he thinks it,s a triangle seal is the shape of the hole it seals into and after the seal being in the hole and compressed for a long length of time and heat the seal stays the shape of the hole it sets in as they always do that. The seal new is a round shaped wall when new.

Hi SJ,
Yes, the old style pumps had a cone shape pocket for the seal which started out round but took on the cone shape......the latest replacements have a stepped bore instead of the cone and I'm not sure if the same old seal is correct or not. The problem he's having may be just due to the dimensions of the "generic" "O" rings that were tried and the Cat seal may work but I hesitate to say that without knowing if the replacement pumps use a different seal.

OM I have installed lots o the new style pumps with the new seals but don,t have a parts book high enough to find the part number but a Cat dealer would have the seals I,m sure.
