Good video of a Cat engine running a compressor for the foghorns. Amusing Ocker mansplaining to the custodian how it works : ) I liked the way the custodian made it understandable to the "layperson"

Interesting video. I do think he was mistaken on his point that the Cat Diesel driving the generator was from the 1920s. The earliest Cat Diesel I can find reference to is the Diesel 60 in 1931. Was that the first Cat Diesel?

Hi Neil,
thanks for that, it is always memorable to be involved in carrying out operational functions for lay people--they enjoy the experience and have a more vivid memory of what they just learned.
The guide is likely the best one we are likely to come across. His patter is A1.
Cheers,

Looks to be a 4400 by the injection system. When were they first made? 1941?

1936 was the beginning of the D4400. 1938 on the D3400. What is it that you are seeing to identify whether it is a D3400 or D4400?

Many things look like my D4600. And again looking at the people near the engine, the engine looks small. I read an article about the station which said it was powered by gasoline engines in 1940. 55 gallon barrels of gasoline caught fire at the boat house and burned everything at the dock.

Probably is a D3400, just wondering if there was something that stood out to tell the difference. Nothing I know of to give it away other than seeing the block number otherwise pretty much a scaled up or down visual.

Having a gasoline engine in the 20s sounds more probable. I suppose the diesel came in on the rebuild after the fire. Neat setup in any case.
