Gday all,

I’ve recently purchased a operational 1952 D2 4U with a blade. I would like to give the old girl a service and am curious is to what oils others are using. The operation and maintenance book states SAE 30 for the engine and SAE 90 for the transmission.

I can’t really find any other thread through the forum about what oils others are using that suit D2. Can CAT engine or TDTO oil be used or is it about buying the right grade of viscosity to suit? Is there a manufacturer out there today that still makes a suitable oil that can be used in these machines without causing any dramas.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers

you will find many opinions on what oils to use. any diesel rated oil is fine and viscosity's from 10w-40w muti and straight grade 30 are used by many---depends on your ambient temperatures. I use GL5 90 w oil in my gear boxes and 30w diesel in the engines as i seldom run in freezing weather, grade 00 grease in the rollers and idlers with a volume type pump, don't want to over pressure them and blow out the seals

many opinions. GL5 gear oil is bad for brass or copper components in synchronous gear boxes. GL1 would be the old spec but as far as i know there is no brass or copper in any of your gear boxes so GL5 would be superior oil. 15-40 in the engine is fine or 30 wt also, just use the one that fits your climate. the pony calls for 30 wt non detergent. i use corn head grease in the rollers because the seals are bad in them anyway and i don't have a volume applicator. i hope this helps.

Yeh we don’t get the ambient temps here is AUS that you guys would have to deal with. The coldest we’d get in winter would be around -2 Celsius by the end of the night just before dawn. Still get up to 15 Celsius during the day. Summers a whole different story. Get up to 40 Celsius easy.

Is there a way to identify if the transmissions got brass or copper parts? Is it worthwhile running CAT TDTO in the transmission or best off to stick with something else?

i don't think there is any copper or brass in the transmission or final drives so GL5 would be superior oil in the gear boxes. if you are concerned then just use GL1 as it is straight mineral oil. the only copper or brass i can find is the thrrow out collar on the clutch and a remote chance the bellows seals if they are old enough.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
