So I just drug home an old LeTourneau J12 scraper - serial number 575. Only blew 2 tires and got stopped by the DOT once in the 15 mile trip home. Plan is to convert it to hydraulic and tow it with a farm tractor so a young buck like me can actually run it.

Anyways, does anyone have any specs and literature for this old beast? My Grandpa and Great Uncles bought it second hand/lightly used in the late 1930's/early '40's. It has been sitting at my cousin's since the early '90's.

Anyways, I assume it is 12 yards struck. Anyone know the weight, heaped capacity, and year?

Why cant you run it with cable? Many "young bucks" have run cable.

Mainly because I don't have a tractor with a cable control unit.

That would cause a small problem.

Not sure if it would help, but I have a Cat Dealer Competitive spec sheet from 1951 which shows a LeTourneau models W, FP, LP, LS, M and D. The Model LP weighs 19,700lbs and Stuck 12.1 and Heaped 15 cu yards. It's 32' 2" long.

Probably too new for you, but I could post the info. if it will help.

Post away that is the "extra" stuff that fits here nicely.

Would it be easier to find this in the future with a search if was a new post?

Ray,
I have a whole 3 ring binder of this stuff, so easier said than done.... I have no clue whether this kind of stuff is commonly available. There are booklets like this on blades, hyd controls, tractors, motor graders engines etc. It came out of a dealer in the 1950's for sales people- How to sell against competitors.

This is just a couple pages from the scraper booklet and the cover.

well sounds like you need to get your self a REAL tractor with a CC unit on it. cables are not slow by any means i would say it would be less fuss to add a cc unit rather than taking to cut up a nice factory made scraper. your going to have some cost in hyd stuff converting it with the change it might not work right i seen lost that only kinda work as they did not get everything just right. i guess plush cabs with A/C and radios what most "farmers" people have to have to get a job done. sorry about the rant but i seen very nice graders and scraper HACK up just cus they did not wont to fix something simple.

Oldcarman thanks for that info that's gold right there

I would think that my 40,000 pound John Deere 9520T might be able to make it into the "real" tractor category even though a CC unit for it would be tough to come by.

As for hacking up a nice can, it is by no means "nice". It has been well used, welded back together, used some more, welded back together, etc. It is really really tired and almost got scrapped a couple years ago. As for hacking, you will only see top notch fabrication come out of our shop.

Yesterday I also rescued a LeTourneau LS out of the junk pile that was also destined for the scrapper for $1K. Plan is to hook then in tandem behind the 9520T.

These aren't just going to be toys. Over the course of this summer we have almost 300,000 yards of dirt to move and more than half will be done with scrapers. Have a line on a much bigger LeTourneau scrapper (model unknown as of yet) that will hopefully be coming home and be converted to go behind our old Steiger.
