hi all,

Trying to figure out oil and fuel filter numbers for my new to me D2. I've read through several threads on the numbers, and from what I can tell, the oil filter is NAPA 1161 or Wix 51161 (Cat number 4A332) and the fuel filter is NAPA 3825 or Wix 33825 (Cat number 7B8262). Am I correct on these numbers? I've seen other numbers on older threads and I'm assuming the numbers I have listed are the most current.

I'm a little more confused about the gaskets. 1) from pictures I see of the NAPA 1161, it shows two o rings that come with the filter. I'm assuming these are the correct o rings. 2) I'm having a little more trouble finding the gaskets for the fuel filters (5B1581 and 7B8037). Would these be the correct gaskets? https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/TWR7B8037 and https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/TWR5B1581. If not, does anyone have a good source?

Thanks

I'm just going through this right now myself, changing out fuel and oil filters on my D2 5U, double check your serial number on your tractor because the part numbers change on the oil filter with the later D2 tractors.

I can't get the part numbers to work with my local Cat Dealer online search for some reason, 7B8262 for the fuel filter group, and for my late model D2, 9F6700 for the oil filter.

Those appear to be the correct fuel filter gaskets. Notice the correct orientation of the small holes which must align with the vent and clean fuel passages respectively.

The fuel filters are certainly correct. I think I have seen 3 different styles, a sock type with a cloth cover, string wound and even ones with a perforated metal can.
Note, you need 3 elements.

Be very careful with the filter plate and the hardware holding the filters on it. The retaining rods are frequently very brittle plastic and the top with the retainer and pin is easily snapped off. Set the assembly on a flat surface and carefully compress the spring on top. Use a pair of pliers and gently twist and pull the pin straight out. If you stress the bottom of the rod assembly by not pressing straight down on a flat surface, you can easily snap the bottom disk off as well.

The oil filter is correct for the later models with full flow filtration. Earlier models of the U series and all the J series use a bypass type filter with a full flow screen or mesh type outer filter over a bypass type cartridge that is a WIX 31165 / NAPA 1165.

These are usually recognisable by the T bar type nut holding the cover on the filter, but many were converted to full flow with field installed kits supplied by CAT back in the day. Occasionally one shows up that was incorrectly done and the filter is bypassing oil, so check to be sure your filter fits the housing and seals securely top and bottom........especially if your tractor is older than the mid 1950's.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Just for some additional info. The latest number from cat for the fuel filters is 489-3196. I just picked up a set from finning for $1 cheaper per filter and they were in stock, I would have had to order in from Napa. The gaskets from cat are now cork gaskets, so I got the 2 gaskets from Napa since they were paper style gaskets. P/N for the gaskets from Napa are 5754 and 5753.

Thanks doubleclutch, I'll pass that on to my local Cat Dealer parts guy, do you happen to have the new Cat number for the 9F6700 oil filter too?
Thanks

1R0659 is a fairly recent number. Might be a newer one though

That's the one, $12.43 plus GST now, the fuel filters are $15.51 plus tax, can't complain about the price of filters from Cat can we, though I'm assuming there will be the 3 fuel filters supplied as 489-3196 plus the filter tower gaskets, the parts number book says that is what comes as the old 7B8262.
