More like starter pinion abuse! I got my pony running finally, and I did that grind twice, decided I needed to remove my starter pinion. Glad I did, my bearings are like tambourines!

I hope it's just the influence of the camera. I don't know how many here took a public speaking class, but it seems having an audience can take a prepared 5 min speach and condense it to 2 min and then :whoo: you can sit back down!

I viewed them all with great interest.

they took me back to when I was a 17 year old city slicker who applied to Green Giant to harvest peas in eastern Wash.in 1957 and lied that I could run a swather or Cat. my farm boy buddy also had never been around a running Cat but had an idea of how to start and run one, and on our time off we went to an equipment dealer after hours and ran through the motions on a D6 sitting in the yard. The 2nd Monday the boss came to the bunkhouse where I was recuperating from running a swather all night and said the Cat guy came to work hung over and couldn't operate it and he saw that I was a Cat guy. Yup, I said. He drove me to the field saying over and over I sure hope you can drive this I sure hope you can drive this. I said nothing but shared his hope. The shiny new looking D6 was running when we got there so I didn't have to start it. jumped on and took off no problem pulling the loader. but killed it on a hill in too high gear. got the pony started ok but wasn't sure which was the clutch and pinion (horizontal over/under levers). sure enough I engaged the clutch and then pulled on the pinion with all my might, chattering away, but the motor quickly started as it was already hot. the vibrating lever burned my palm so I never got them mixed up again. ran the cat all the rest of the summer with no problem. the other cat guy and I were the elites on the crew, nobody guessed that I was anything but an old hand. I got black jeans and suspenders to go with the image.

Good story! sometimes you to have learn just by figuring things out, but hopefully doing it right in the end.

Honestly Rome I could not always tell if they were making a cold start or after it was already warmed up. Also, I could not tell the air temperature. Out here in S. CA, it never gets real cold like it would be back where you are in the winter so we tend to shorten the cycle a bit. Once oil pressure is there, fire it up!

No,, once oil pressure is up you close the valves, then after smoking a Lucky you turn on the fuel.

What also is so ridiculous is having the throttle open when the compression is off, the cylinders are just loading up with fuel and washing the liners. The cylinders are not building any heat until they finally put it on compression and it tries to fire. And when its trying to fire it is also trying kick the pinion out.
