Just picked up a 1959 d7d 17a in fair condition. Everything is working good cleared a few acres of land with the old girl so far. But I would like to know how to use the winch. The previous owner said they didn't ever use it nor didn't know how to use it but I would like to learn. If anyone can tell me the steps of operation it would be grately appreciated. Thanks.

I did purchase a manual from Jensales.com after reading the 354 pages there was no information on the winch or hydraulic system. Before I spend another 60$ American on another manuel just so I can know the sequence of how to turn on the winch. I was hoping someone could just inform me of how to engage the d7n winch on a 1959 d7d 17a tractor.

Jensales are not good manuals, the original Hyster parts and instruction manual shows everything. The longer lever is the brake, forward is the released position back is the brake hold position, The shorter lever is the control lever, to pull cable in lever is pulled back and main clutch engaged, center position of lever is neutral, forward is the release position to let out cable. That is for an over winding winch. Always release the brake before using the winch. Only apply the brake when tractor master clutch is disengaged or the tractor motor will be stalled.

Thanks Rome and Machias for the winch info. Now I need manuals for adjusting track tension and front CCU on my D7-D. I have searched ebay and google to no avail.

I should mention that last weekend while exercising my D7-D before putting it away for the winter there was a very pronounced metal on metal sound both while running and while idling. I couldn't pin it down but was afraid it might indicate transmission failure. I got out of the cab to look around and saw that the winch was turning. I had inadvertently activated it while climbing in past the levers. the metal on metal was the big hook coming around and striking the frame. lucky it went past each time and didn't hang up.

One other thing, if it’s the same as my D6N, you can’t be in gear while running the winch, or serious transmission damage can occur. Most likely the engine will stall, but that’s what it says in my manual.

If all else fails your dealer will have the books. You need to search by serial number not model, such as d7d. Also you ccu will be its own book I believe.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
