I have taken the oil pan off my 17A and in doing so it took a piece of the gasket off between the clutch housing and the engine oil pan--although the correct thing to do is pull clutch and replace the gasket, I figure I might as well repair the gasket. If it doesn't hold I won't loose any time or have to redo the oil pan on the engine.
Old Magnet says on 05-23-2016, 11:34 AM The only info I can offer is use Aviation gasket cement on assembly instead of grease. A few others stand by the Aviation gasket cement.
My question is this--in this situation what is the best repair cement should I use? While I am asking should I put the Aviation gasket cement on both sides of the oil pan gasket or just the block side. ( no, unlike the manual says, the pan didn't magically fall off leaving the gasket in one piece)

I would use silicone gasket maker instead of the brush-on. I usually only apply it to the "unstuck" side of the gasket and any tears, leaving good, stuck gasket in place on whichever part it is on. That is how I would use the brush-on material as well and I have a bottle of it in my tool box right now, but I think the silicone will seal bigger gaps from missing chunks of gasket etc.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Why repair a bad gasket go to the local auto parts store and get a roll of fiber material and a ball pien hammer and make one. On newer stamped oil pans they usually have a ressesed area to hold gasket maker, that cast machined face likes gasket and aviation glue my 2 cents i would not personally hope that an old gasket has not seperated underneath on the bottom side to a degree and could begain to seap after vibration.. like the old man says do it right do it once. 😊 good luck

I have been cleaning parts and chasing threads on bolts, but will get to replacing the pan this weekend. I plan on patching in the gasket that was torn out with the "Ford or GM anaerobic gasket maker designed for Super Duty Diesel oil pans". I am hoping this works as the clutch housing won't have any pressure in it, or at least I don't think it will. If it leaks I will have the engine closed up and tackle that on another day. I have already bought a oil pan gasket $32.00 I can't make one that cheap although I did make one for my RD 7 as Cat didn't have one.
On another subject where do I find the lock to the idle adjust on a Zenith Carb. Cat Part 5F7678? mine broke and Cat doesn't have one.

I have tried to find a few places online and no one has one, just rebuild kits. What kind of Zenith carb is this? If I can't get one how do I keep the ilde valve shaft screw from vibrating out of the carb? (blue locate, maybe a spring between the carb body and the head of the screw, surly someone has had this problem).

An online search for that part number returns several hits including FP Smith and an ebay listing by Arkansas Diesel Service.

Doesn't always work, but you will find stuff that the CAT parts guys cannot get anymore....and plenty they can!

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
