Hi all

I recently bought a farm (in Australia) and it came with a Cat D4D dozer. When we were bringing it in to a shed to give it a service the left track came off. We got it back on and in the process of pumping in grease to retention it it appears that we have done the track adjuster seal - grease is coming out from under the spring - and the track will not tension (we drove it forward and the track gets looser, so it is now still in the paddock)

I have had trouble finding a parts manual for the 85A. As the operators manual and service manuals both cover the 78A as well as the 85A I bought the 78A parts manual. The parts manual has several drawings for the track adjuster and several part numbers for the seal - I do not know which one I need. Anyone have advice?
Options:
IM7743 Hydraulic Track Adjusting Group (first, second and third types)
3K8213 Hydraulic Track Adjusting Group (first, second, third and fourth types)
5K8114 Hydraulic Track Adjusting Group

Also, can I change the seal myself? Or do I need a press to be able to work with the spring?

I don't think I need to break the track as the recoil spring bolt is not broken - correct?

Do I need any special tools? Any extra large spanners?

Any tips on getting it done?

Thanks

Geoff

Hi Geoff,
welcome to the BB.
any books you need should relate to a USA built D4D with a Serial Number of 78A 01794--from my Comparative Serial Number Lists for Aussie built machines.
Back in the day basic machines complete out to the sprocket/outer bearing holder ends, less track frames/undercarriage and attachments were imported and the missing parts were made here. Due to the percentage of Aussie content they were deemed to have been built in Australia.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
