I bought a cat 20 crawler last weekend for my son, he is 9 it is his to fix and maintain I am trying to stay back it is tough to not jump in and do it for him. He is really excited about this project we are rebuilding the carb and it needs the clutch adjusted. We haven't ordered a book yet and I can't find what type of oil it takes for any of the compartments. We are itching to get this thing working this weekend I couldn't get a book in that short of amount of time. I don't want to start running it without a full service it has set a very long time. Could anyone tell me what oil is recommended in all compartments, I searched this forum and could find anything maybe I missed it. This looks like a great forum full of info. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Rusty Gold
P.S. I will be having my son read the responses.

Hi Rusty Gold.
Welkum too ther 4um. Nice catch. Thanks for sharing.

I'm not wunna the 'ex-spurts' here but I'd hazard a guess at straight 30 weight for the engine and either 90 or 140 for the transmission and final drives. Doubtless, somebody will 'kee-wrecked' me if I'm wrong.

If you hafta order any parts from Caterpillar or pretty much anywhere else, the tractor serial number is GOLD. It should be on a rectangular tag on the back end of the steering clutch case and also on the left side of the engine block. If the tags are missing, it was also usually stamped into the parent metal under where the tags were rivetted to the machine. The serial # will also get you the vintage of the machine from some of the better informed members here.

Azfer your son, you've definitely got the right idea, get 'em infected with 'yellow fever' young and severely.

Happy 'catting'.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

I found between the two oilers on top of the transmission stamped PL 350 that does match the large tag on the back of the seat. I still want to find it on the engine I didn't see a tag, just to see if it is original or been pieced together. I suppose it is probably pretty forgiving on oil anyway I appreciate the advice.

Welcome to the group! Both you and your son will get much satisfaction from the new toy. I’m guessing he will be the envy of his peers. That is a neat tractor. I really like the older ones with side curtains. Would you mind sharing some history about your new acquisition? I think the stories behind each tractor and previous owners add to the value. Please share! Juiceman.

Hi Rusty and welcome to the forum! I concur with Juiceman, that's a great Father/Son project and something that he'll never forget. I highly recommend obtaining an owners manual and parts book as they are invaluable and contain a wealth of information. Good luck on your Twenty project and keep us updated...photos of kids with grease on their hands is always a bonus!

Rusty Gold,

Welcome to this forum. This should be a fine project tractor for your son to learn a lot and own it with pride.

I am not aware of any parts for this machine that would still be available from Cat. There is a section on here listing possible parts sources and a place where you can place WTB posts.

I have L 1189 in which I run 30 Wt. non-detergent mineral oil in the engine that I buy from NAPA. Modern detergent containing oils can be detrimental to these old engines.

Have fun with it and keep us informed here as we are all interested in young folks catching "yellow fever"!

I was curious if you had received any history on the tractor itself and possibly explaining the red paint?

Welcome aboard. I did get a inlet valve spring from our lacal Cat dealer. Was in stock Melbourne. Maybe it is used on a later model as well.

Hi Rusty Gold,

Your son is so lucky to have such an understanding Dad, your support and encouragement will help him develop his skills and knowledge and most importantly his enquiring mind and ability to use reason and logic.

PL350 is a 1928 build, PL I through PL1669 were built in 1928 so your tractor is possibly in the 1st quarter of the year. End PL production was a total number of 6332 units, ending in 1932, final serial number was 6598. The discrepancy in numbers is due to a block of 266 numbers not used. There was two track gauges, standard 42" and wide 55".

Regards, Wombat
