I think those were commonly used in Australia. Down under members can confirm:clap2:

Yes, its a 4600, also the first Cat truck engine in the late '30's.

I was curious how Cat got started into truck engines. I'm presuming they used direct start. Hope this isn't too bad of ettiqiette sorta poaching. Anyone have pics of early Cat truck engines? Can't help but think a D4600 would be pretty lowly trying to persuade 30 tons down a highway. And what transmission/ clutch would be used. I was thinking recently that a D339 out of a D7 would be interesting in a truck. For sure it would be pretty lazy given I think they only ran maybe 1400rpm and I am sure even of one was to build an aluminum pan, it would still weight 4000lb. I think someone should build an old Pete needle nose with a D339, turbo, pony start 😂😬, D7 trans with a 4 spd auxiliary.

mangoman, these topics tend to weave around a bit but you're still on topic. My dream toy hauler would be either a G3408 or G3412 (but running on propane) in a Pete or KW with a 6x4 transmission. No emissions issues, no smoke, smoother sound, still big power, and the V8 or V12 factor : ) With some customization of rotating mass setup, possibly higher reliable rpms too - maybe up to 2500

Haha that is quite the dream! That would for sure be one of a kind and yes clean as clean right from cold start up. I did much of my apprenticeship working on large stationary nat gas engines and compressors. Lots of G3406/8/12s. They had a bad habit of burning valves to the point where we would bring a head when we went to service them. The 3500s are what I thought of as the best engine of any make on nat gas. I once was on a crew that overhauled one that had run just shy of 80,000hrs and had only a few cylinder heads replaced (individual). I will have to do some searching around for D468 powered trucks. Anyone know what that would be rated for? 100hp? I just can't see that pulling very much. Anyone seen one in person? Truck application pics?

1N3001-up were rated 100 hp, earlier versions at 89 hp.
