We need a picture. Does not sound like a Cat D318. A Cat 318 is a inline 6 cylinder as used in the 9U series D6 and also for a number of years in the Model 12 grader. I wonder if you have a 6V-71 Detroit as they were common in the old construction tug boats we used. A 8V-71 has 318 HP. Is your engine a V6 and does it have 2 hand screws on top of each valve cover securing them down?
6V71 is a correct serial number for a marine D318.
I'll be darned. I guess an old dog can learn something new every day. Thanks for enlightening both of us.
we need pics anyway, if marine it should have reverse gear, if not.... maybe incomplete.
If that Marine engine is set up for raw water/fresh water cooling, water pump parts may be difficult to find as the pumps are different than Industrial Engine, Tractor Engine applications. You will need to acquire the 6Vxxxx engine parts book. One source is ebay, there are some listed there. Service information for the D318, Marine and all others is to be found in the "Servicemen's Reference Book for the Diesel 4-1/2" bore 6 Cylinder Engine Form #30238-2

This engine looks like any other D318 power unit. It has its own radiator for cooling. The air cleaner is definitely a marine air cleaner. There is no crankcase breather or oil fill where they usually are. The oil goes in one of the valve covers. It also has a hand operated oil pump to change the oil. This engine must have been down in a hole. I will try to get pictures tomorrow. We are going to use this power unit to operate a sawmill.
