Very good question. The reason why I had a strong feeling about this is that the majority of the high TENS have been found between serial numbers 3500 and 4000. I can think of 20 or so that fall into that serial number break down and I only know of one that falls out of that range, but I sure that there are more.
I will try and break down the roation for you. Yes CW on the front of the engine is CCW when looking at the back if the trans or pinion gear. So now looking at it from the rear, if the ring gear was on the left side of the pinion, the top of the ring gear would go towards the front of the machine. If the ring gear was on the right side of the pinion the top of the ring gear would go towards the rear. Does this make sense? If it does, please keep reading.
From this point forward we will look at the side view of the left final drive with the front of the machine to the left.
With the ring gear on the left of the pinion we have stated that the the top of the ring gear will move towards the front of the machine. Now with our new view point (left side of the machine) that would be CCW. CCW through the brake drum and to the small drive gear. The bull gear and the sprocket would be CW for a standard ten at this time, which is the wrong direction. Therefore if the ring gear is on the left of the pinion it would be for a High Clearance tractor. There is a third gear in the HC final drives. That changes the bull gear and sprocket rotation back to CCW, which is the correct rotation for the view point that I have explained. Does all of this make sense?

When I saw a picture of the Standard TEN transmission in a REALLY old manual, it looked like power flows only from the top shaft in the transmission into the bottom shaft and then out the rear to the pinion gear.
What you are saying is that the power goes into the front half of the shaft, down to the lower shaft which drives the rear portion of the upper shaft again like in a standard automobile/truck 3 speed transmission.
Hence the pinion rotates in the same direction as the engine when viewed from the rear of the transmission. (Operators perspective)
Which would make the top of the left pinion gear go forward like you said.
Am I right about the transmission?

Yes you are correct! Sorry I did not mention that part of it before. While the input shaft and tail/output shaft are on the same plane, they are 2 separate shafts that rotate on their own, unless they are locked together which would be direct.
I am just tickled to death that someone actually understood all of my physco babble in my previous post.
Have a great day!

chad.
I understood your babble too.... Just think if you rebuilt a small ten on a high ten setup.... You would have one forward gear and three reverse!

So a fellow collector takes me aside at a Gas and Steam show to say that he bought 2 TEN's. A running one and another disassembled one!
Guess who he gave the dissambled one to?
YEP! ME!
Now I have almost enough to put together one good looking running one and one OK one and still end up with a bunch of left-overs!
PS
I have received a job offer today!
Life is suddenly looking up again!
Happy Holidays to all of You!

Yes, you can flip the ring gear over and set up any rear as a standard or a HC.

Email the serial numbers to Mike who has the cat ten registery. There is a thread on the board about it.
