I have a D7-3t serial number 23593 and need to drain the crankcase.
The drain plug is a square female type. I tried to measure the size of the square to find a male plug wrench to fit it and it measured 13/16 as near as I could tell. Does anyone know if this is the right size and if not what the correct size is?
Thanks for your help.

I thought they were all a 1-1/8" female hex. 1-1/8 is approximate as I remember. I think I ground the last one I made a little to fit deeper into the socket.

If yours is square then you might try a 3/4" drive and see if it doesn't fit well enough.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

The tool list in the back of the 3T parts book shows the two hex size drain plug wrench with the change to the larger hex at 3T23647. The female hex is tapered. Here are the two sizes.

Somebody must have changed the plug, later tractors came with 3/4" square as mentioned, I always thought they were better than the hexed because the slight taper in the hexed plug and hex tool didn't really fit that great.

It must have been changed out at some time because it is definately a square female plug. I will give a 3/4" drive a try and see if it works.

Early and late plugs are the same on the 3T, just the female hex size changes. Both are flanged type and use the same 0L1124 gasket. Agreed, the Cat hex wrench is not that great a fit but does do the job.

OM, some members might like the 3/4 square plug part #, look on late D8K's final drive fill caps if you have time and post the part #, I know I got some plugs and replaced the hex plugs on my D8H, made my life easier. Seems like the D8K's I had were all square drive. They had petcocks for engine oil though

I looked up D8Kxxxx to last built and the finals level/fill plugs are the large female hex plug and gasket as the late 3T's. There is a different part number 8B6599 plug with same 0L1124 gasket used for the torque converter housing drain. It would also take a female wrench but I can't tell the shape. Maybe that's the source for 3/4"???

edit: looked up 8B6599 plug (magnetic) and it is a female square wrench pattern.
3/4" drive also appears to be correct.

The ones I bought were regular non magnetic, looked identical to the hex plug just had 3/4 instead. Thought I might have one in the shop but can’t find Edit: Best I can find online is # 0L-0827, not sure though

OL0827 is the old common large hex socket type.

I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
