just wondering about the older Cat Gen sets. in particular the one with the same engine as the D4,did the set operate at 1800 RPM? was there any design differences in the tractor engine and the generator engine? Thanks

I seem to recall that I thought the D311 / 315 / 318 were six-pole generators so ran at 1200 for 60Hz

Small plants ran at 1200, some of the larger ran 900, slow speed diesels = slow speed generators, loved the old sets....WA7OPY

The D315 gen sets (4Vxxxx) ran at 1800, 1500 and 1200 rpm.
Gen sets typically have tighter governors 3% instead of 10%.
Major difference in oil sump and pump arrangements that do not have scavenger sections.

By the 1960's the D320, D330 and newer engines ran 4 pole generators at 1800 or 1500 rpm depending on 60 or 50 Hz.

Around 1960, I think there might have been some very late D311 and D318 engines that were actually a redesign of the old engines/precursor to the new engines that were coming. Same bore and stroke but different from the older models. I think those engines were designed for 1800 rpm as part of the move to higher rpm/higher horsepower.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄
