What year was D8H serial# 46A20114 built? Second question should I be putting some ATF in the ultra low sulfur fuel that I buy at the pump for my 5UD2?
Thanks

The D8H is a 1969 model......and yes, it wouldn't hurt to add some ATF to the fuel....not because it is ultra low sulfur but due to the general lack of lubricity in the modern fuel.

Unfortunately I can't seem to find my notes on the quantity of ATF to add per gallon.....know I've got it here somewhere:rolleyes:
Somebody else may have their memory working:)

OK, found it....under engines ????? right where I filed it.
Ratio suggested is one quart per 10 Gallons of fuel.......but I have seen variations of this.

OM, there are several different formulations of ATF, which is the recommended one?

If it were me, I would just buy the fuel treatment that is on the market that is formulated to address the lubricity issue with all of the low / no sulfur fuels.

Replied by carlsharp on topic 2-Cycle not ATF
There has been a lot of discussion on this topic on the diesel truck forums, a quick search will give you LOTS to read.

If you don't want to buy a specific diesel supplement, the general consensus is to use 2 stroke oil, as it is designed to be mixed with a fuel, and burned. ATF has all kinds of additives that are unnecessary for what you are try to achieve.

As a general rule add 1 ounce of 2 cycle oil per 1 gallon of fuel. I put a quart in when I fill my 2001 Dodge, known for their lubrication-based IP failures. The truck runs quieter, and I get a 2-3 MPG bonus that pays for the oil.

For this application a good 2-stroke is low solvent (more lubricant) and low ash (injector health). The good news is that the homework has been done for us- The following is a 'sticky' by WorkhorseDiesel at cumminsforum.com:

The Wally-world brand is less then $8 a gallon.

2 Cycle oil makes much more sense. I still would buy the properly formulated supplement.

What about useing biodiesel as an additive it has more lubricity?

There seems to be some issues with th 5% to 20% blends of bio-diesel and diesel. I have not paid any attention to it other than to note that there is some issue. Plant based oils do not have a high film strength, and that may be the problem.

Hey guys,
I'm not trying to address the general transportation field here, just looking for a reasonable light oil top cylinder and injection system lube to simulate what was in the fuel at the time these tractors were in vogue. I don't think it matters to much what you use be it ATF, 2-cycle oil, Marvel Mystery Oil, motor oil or other light petroleum based lubricating oil including the fancy formulated additives.
I don't think we're talking about enough quantity here to cause any detrimental effects.

Can't answer the bio-diesel as an alternative question.

I remember when a diesel spill left a permanent oil slick until cleaned up.....with the new stuff just wait a few days and it's gone.

On the #2 home heating oil (known in the trade as stove oil) my ancient refinery operation experience was that this was a down graded mix of #2 diesel plus tank and pipeline flushings from the process of changing storage and pipeline delivery systems and would contain traces of most any petroleum products. Based on that experience I wouldn't use it in my own engines.
