A friend turned me on to a D2- 5U15406 and I brought it home Saturday. What year would that be? It has Cat blade, Hyster winch, solid idlers, hand start pony.

It was kept in a three sided shed most of its life, so all in all, pretty good shape, though it needs a paint job. Owner had to pull it to get it started. It started right up in about 5 feet. Pony wasn't running. Right steering clutch appears to be stuck or has some other issue. Only steers to the left. I was too excited to wait (I put other projects on hold) and Sunday went out to tinker on it. The pony just needed the typical.... gas and spark. Cleaned the tank, then ran some rust dissolver through the tank, blew out the gas line. Cleaned the mag points and adjusted. Cleaned the carb bowl. changed the oil. Pony started up on the second pull. Filled all the fluids and hit fittings with grease. Then ran the machine for a couple hours. The valve cover gasket was leaking like crazy. Stopped and fixed that. Then topped off the oil and went back at it for another hour. Got some dirt moved that I needed out the way and a tree pushed over. I was told that this machine had a rebuilt engine and I think it must have been. Really strong and no smoke at all. The winch is stuck in neutral. Probably like on my other D2 and the gear on top is stuck. Just needs a little KROIL and encouragement.

The club serial number book indicates it was built in 1955. Congratulations, it sounds like you found a gem.

Lee, thanks for the year. I was thinking it must be one from the fifties, since it has the top access to the main clutch. My other D2 is 5U2942, which if I remember was a 1949 model. Yeah, I think I lucked out. No buyers remorse here. The seller was real up front, but had inherited the machine, so didn't know much except that the pony wouldn't run and the right clutch was stuck. They had used it a little, then decided to sell it. I gave the man $2500 for it, which I thought was a very fair price. Heck the winch is probably worth a fair bit by itself.
Thanks again.

Hey that's another great story! These machines never cease to amaze me. I also have a D2. They are such wondeful little machines, way, way ahead of there time.

Congratulations!
