Hi All,

We have a D8H 46A with pony engine start. We are looking into converting to electric start. The electric starter motor kit seems straight forward. Our machine currently does not have glow plug prechambers so they would have to be replaced.

Can anyone help point me in the direction of what part numbers I need? In reading old posts it looks like I might need 2P0484 prechambers, 3T9562 glow plugs, and maybe a 7S3726 harness for the glow plugs (not really worried about the harness... I can wire the glow plugs up).

I see some people mention that some different washers might be required to shim the prechamber correctly in the head. Sounds like 7:30-8:00 position pretorque gives the desired 12:00 position after the 200lb.ft torque. What is the part number of these different washers? They have to seal the water jacket from the cylinders so I know they can't just be any old washer. I have a couple old prechambers lying around so I know what the parts look like that I'm dealing with.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the thorough list Old Magnet! I was able to verify the prechamber PN this morning with the Cat dealer (this was before I saw your reply). When I gave them the 2P0484 part number they did show it fit the D8H with 46A SN prefix. They were quite helpful. Now I'm on the right track... I should have everything I need to put my parts order together.

One last question... the OEM Cat prechambers are $168ea. Is it risky to go with aftermarket prechambers (I see they are available for under $50ea). I realize there is an issue with the glow plug placement on the aftermarket chambers.

We put over 500 hours/year on this machine so I'll probably stick with the Cat parts but I figured it was worth hearing some experience on the aftermarket chambers.

Thanks.

My 46A24433 to last built shows the earlier glo-plug chamber changing from 8S7601 to 2P0484 at s/n 46A30392-up.
I'd use the after market units myself. If they survive the installation torquing they will be ok. Some have had them separate at the welded/brazed joint but then I've heard of the Cat units doing the same.

Check the price on Cat part # 247-3296 Cat classic parts. Cheaper with the same warranty as regular Cat parts.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
