Looking forward to the show. October should be a great time of year in Texas. With the last National Show in May we are in for a bit of a stretch between the shows. Hopefully plans workout and we can have a members event at Peoria again earlier next year to give us a fix to get us to fall.

The 2018 National ACMOC show being held at Holt Cat headquarters in San Antonio is less than 4 months away. Please make plans to come down and check out all of the festivities. The weather should be nice October 26-28th in Texas and things should be cooled down. We will have the Holt family collection of antique Holt’s, Best, and Caterpillar equipment on display along with lots of the newest Cat equipment that you can check out. I encourage and would greatly appreciate anyone to bring their antique equipment down to display at the show. We have plans to have a collection of stationary Krueger Atlas engines that were originally made in San Antonio.

Along with National ACMOC Show Holt will be celebrating their 85th anniversary on Saturday the 27th and the City of San Antonio celebrating 300 year tricentennial. Please check out the links below for area hotel rooms, and local attractions.

I was down there a few weeks ago and got a first hand look at the facility and the show grounds. I will post a photo soon of the grounds as soon as I can get my phone and computer together at the same time to download the photos. The area that Holt Cat is preparing for ACMOC, for the event, is a rectangle shaped 20 acre site. Paved visitor parking lots are outside this area. Holt is arraigning for a golf cart rental company to be on site. I will post details as they become available. There is a primitive camping area, a display area, a vending area, and a nice sized play area and of course the parade route. The entire area is fenced and Holt is providing security for the event. We will have a huge covered breezeway between two large shops to hold the banquet in. A Holt building that is located close to the banquet facilities will be open for us to use the modern indoor facilities during the banquet. In addition to the ACMOC event, it is also San Antonio's 300th birthday. There is a lot going on in the city so allow a extra day or two. Holt is sponsoring a lunch for a bunch of City movers and shakers on Friday and a employee event on Saturday. Both are timed so there banquets will be over in time for the people to come to the ACMOC show in time to see the parade. Saturday could be huge as Holt has over 2,000 employees in Texas. Holt and the Holt Collectors Club, ACMOC Chapter 24, has really stepped up to the plate to make this a show to remember. Bring your machines if you can, but if not, come anywhere and be prepared for a good time.

Edit: Don't forget the annual members meeting and banquet. I will post more details once we get the catering contract finalized. It is Texas cooking to the bone and I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Here's the map. The Holt dealership is huge. The rectangle area in the lower right corner reserved for ACMOC is 20 acres. Make plans now for a fun event. We can expect decent weather at that time of the year in San Antonio.

William K. Holt and
the Early History
William K. Holt, the second son of Caterpillar inventor Benjamin Holt, was a graduate of the University of California-Berkeley, and employee of Holt Manufacturing. By 1919 he was in Texas as service manager for Holt Machinery of Texas and with another Holt employee partnered to open the first Cat dealership in Mexico in 1925.

In 1933, Cat needed a new dealer in south Texas, and William K. sold out of Mexico and opened William K. Holt Machinery on S. Flores Street on June 3, 1933. With 10 employees, the economy was in the depth of the depression. Holt has some governmental and little private business. With the introduction of the Caterpillar D8 and large LeTourneau scrapers in 1937, significant opportunities opened up for earthmoving, highway construction and large site work.

One of William K.'s first customers was H.B. Zachry, and their deal helped Zachry get started in the earthmoving business. With the cost of a new D8 at $8000 and a scraper at $4000, Holt allowed Zachry to pay for the equipment at $1 per yard of earth moved. Zachry's first job was a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers flood control project in Hidalgo County, where every 12,000 yards of dirt moved paid for a tractor/scraper unit.

Bill Holt opened a store in Weslaco in 1938 and in Corpus Christi in 1941.
Holt’s inventiveness continued to flourish in Texas. Seeing the need for specialized land-clearing equipment with Hal Peterson of Kerrville and Bob Kleburg of the King Ranch, in the late 1940s Holt sketched the idea on a napkin and later designed the root plow on the shop floor with partner Howard Murphy, a former Caterpillar sales manager who joined Holt in 1944. After developing the root plow, in quick succession he developed Holt root rakes and other brush management implements.
Today, HOLT land-clearing equipment is sold all over the world.

If I bring my golf kart what is the insurance we need to get? With the D4 I should have plenty of room for the kart.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
