Crankshaft Damper Question

Hello everyone, I've never posted here before but have browsed through here a few times. This looks to be an interesting site. I farm and ranch in NW Oklahoma near Waynoka, the home of Little Sahara State Park. I have a Cat D5 dozer #96J947 that I am currently doing an out of frame overhaul on the engine. The crankshaft damper looks pretty bad to me and I'd sure like to replace it while I'm in the mood. My nearest Cat dealer shows that Cat is out of stock on this piece and has no idea when they will be available. I've called a few other sources and have had no luck coming up with one. The part # is 7S 2233. Do any of you folks have any good ideas on where I might look? Thanks for your time, Cowpoke73717

This Cat dealer here in Pa. has about 28 branch stores and they have a system to check any part in any of the 28 stores so give this place a call and see if they can help. It is Ph. 888-232-5948 and let us know how you make out. They are Cleveland Bros. Equip. Co. Cat dealer.

Might help to say what engine it is on, in case someone knows where one is sitting out of a machine etc.

I think I have heard of having the rubber re-vulcanized, but couldn't tell you where you might get that done.

D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D

According to my Cat SNID book it should have a 3306 engine in it CC as I just looked it up for him.

Cowpoke, the Cat serial number book I have listed the original engine as the 3306 engine starting with 96J1 and up. Check and see if there is a serial number on the engine block on the left rear just below the head and post it here. It,s possible another engine was put in if you say it,s a D333.The 3306 is a 3N engine. I just checked the 3N engine and it went in production in 1972 but the 96J tractor it said went in production in 1967 so as low as a SN you have it seems as if they would have made more tractors than that before 1972 so you may be right it could be D333 but check and see if it has a SN on the tractor engine separate from the tractor SN on the rear housing above the drawbar. This Cat SNID book is not always right on the exact dates and models.

SJ, The number tag on the upper left corner of block is the same number as the tractor. The Cat parts man that I've been talking to says it is a D333. I guess I'll find out if he was right when the engine parts get here. Thanks, Cowpoke

My sometimes right source shows the 96J to have the D333C engine up to sr. # 96J2654 then changes to the 3306 (03N) at sr. # 2655 (1971)

Checked Machinery Trader..........was a dry run.
