R4Pat - my book shows there were a total of 5,383 S/N 6G prefix units built from 1935 to 1944. There is a lot of discussing on what year the R4 went to the D4, some where in the late 30's??

The R4 model was built from 1938 to 1944, and as I understand the situation, mostly for the government that wanted gasoline powered tractors. The civilian market had pretty much rejected the gasoline powered crawler tractor and there wasn't an adequate civilian market to justify continued production. The R4 was discontinued in 1944, it never evolved into the RD4. The RD4/D4 was produced from 1936 to 1959, and then became the D4C.

The width of the track pads on your R4 appears to be narrower than normal, do you know why your tractor is fitted with this runner gear.

The track pads are narrower and I don't know why. To me it does not look like they were cut off, I don't remember where, but somewhere online I have seen another one with the narrow tracks, I wonder if it was for some kind of row farming?

Tom Kramer in Michigan City has another R4 with the offset pads. I am not sure which row-crop it was intended for, but that is the same setup he has. Very nice job, that machine is one to be proud of.
