We have a Russell Pony Patrol Factory No. P 205 horse drawn grader. Russell Equipment Company was in Minneapolis, but Caterpillar bought the company in 1928. Since ours has Illinois U. S. A. stamped into the frame, I think it might have been manufactured after Cat bought out Russell and still kept the Russell name on the graders until about 1931. I would like to know the year ours was manufactured, if that is possible.

Is there any source I can research for more detailed information about the Russell graders? The information above I learned from a Dec. 1, 2006, Construction Equipment Magazine article by Keith Haddock that I found on-line through a Google search.

Are you sure its stamped, not raised lettering? i kinda think what your seeing might part of the steel manufacturers markings.

"lets see it" means take a photo of what ur reading and post it. look for other raised wording, i still think its manufacturers marking.

Cat initiated the purchase of Russell Mfg Co in August 1928, signed the purchase agreement in November 1928, and the exact takeover date of Russell, was set as Dec 1, 1928.

Immediately after purchase, all Russell product lines not related to earthmoving were sold off, and all that was kept was graders, elevating graders and Motor Patrols. Any Motor Patrols that used other than Cat power units were deleted from the product line.

In April 1929, the "Dotted Line", the Cat salesmans bible, produced an issue called "Selling Russells".

This showed the entire Russell line of graders sold by Caterpillar .. still with Russell names and models on them .. and described the same way in the charts in the booklet. The company was referred to as "The Russell Grader Mfg Co" and was described as a division of the Caterpillar Tractor Co.

From 1930-31, the Russell connection and name was gradually dropped, particularly when Caterpillar introduced redesigned graders that had been re-engineered, or were totally new grader designs, produced by Caterpillar engineers.

Attached is a photo of the raised wording on the frame. If you are standing on the rear, it is on the left side. The only other numbers I have found are on the rear by the handle. They read G41.

Attached is a photo of the factory number of our grader. Thanks so much for all of the information. I find it interesting that the information on the grader says "Pony Patrol." I am so happy to get such quick responses to my post. Thanks again to those of you who replied.

I have another question regarding the grader. The Construction Equipment Magazine states that the Russell Grader Manufacturing Co. was opened in 1903 in Stephen, Minn. The 1921 Farm Implement News Buyer's Guide lists the Russell Grader Manufacturing Co. as being located in Minneapolis, Minn. Is there any information about when they moved to Minneapolis assuming this is the same company?

My son has a Russel I think a little bigger than yours restored.
I or should say my son has it now . A Russell Catalog we got from Al Smith. I will see if he can scan your model and post it.
