Hello,
I've searched for "packing" and have come up with info on water pumps, cover gaskets, etc but nothing in regards to the shifter tower. My "new" 1949 D4 7U would only shift in to 1st and reverse and the neutral travel was so limited I couldn't even get over to the 3/4 gates.
After taking the tower off I found it was a real mess inside. The boot had been shot long ago allowing moisture and dirt to collect. The cover that the spring sits on is in real poor shape but I think I can continue to use after I straightened it up:

From searching I have found that a CV boot made by Dorman should work as a shift boot replacement, part # 614-001. A cheaper alternative to the CAT boot.
But, I'm not finding the packing or an alternative to the packing. There was zero packing in this shifter so I assume it was serviced and removed or it completely disintegrated over time.
I thought for one option I could purchase some graphite impregnated rope that is used for fire place gaskets and coil it in to that space but I would be afraid of it slipping out and binding up inside.
Another thought was to cut down a cheap felt wool arbor buffer wheel like this:

I could just soak that good in oil and the 1/2" thickness should fit the gap just right;

Also, while we are on the subject of the shifter, does anyone know what the purpose is of this hole I'm pointing at in the picture? I don't see a corresponding hole in the transmission top cover or the shift top cover. I was hoping it was a hole that allowed grease or oil to get in to the shift ball but apparently not.

I've also acquired a D2 5J that must have the same issue, it's shifter won't move at all so I'll be doing the same on it soon.
Thanks!
Jordan
