All,

Further to my 14A pony rebuild, I am probably going to have a flame spray process applied to the two main journals to bring them back to standard from 0.030 under. They are just rough enough that putting in new 0.030 under bearings would not be a good fix. The parts guy at the CAT dealer told me they have had good luck using this process on smaller crankshafts but also some bad luck when applied to larger shafts.

Am I heading in the right direction here? Others have good/bad experience with flame spray?

I had that done to the front main on my 5U's crank. The guy said it's fine as a process - the trick is to understand that working on journals toward the center of the crank can result in bending which means it then has to be straightened. But he said that it's a well-known and manageable process. I would think given the short length of your pony's crank, it's not going to be a huge problem but you should still ask him to check for true once it's cooled down.

well we do spay welding at the shop. it's a great job as long as you do A B C. it's a very detailed orated it can help save parts like your's. i know you will but have a every good look at when it's done cus your just "gluing" new metal on as your bass meatal never get to welding temp. plus you'll need to clean it every well as the poured gets everywhere when spray welding.

I had the crank in my d2 pony sprayed 5 years ago. Still in there. I would do it again.

What is the cost versus finding another? There was a pup for a 14a on kijiji in Vancouver not to long ago. Here is the link. http://www.kijiji.ca/v-heavy-equipment-parts-accessories/nanaimo/d8-caterpillar-14a-parts/199022549

Are there any facilities around any more that do the "hard chrome" journal build up? Used to be fairly common years ago.

OM,

I am not familiar with that process. My CAT dealer guy was positive about the flame spray process so I am heading in that direction.

Pioneernorth,

I will eventually post the final costs and results here once this is done. I am in for about $1400 give or take at this point. I could probably scout up another pony but then I might confront the same problems that I have with the one I've got. "Not running" leaves you wondering why?

Thanks everyone for your input.

I had the crank for my D2 done here. Very good people to work with. Below is a linl to their home page and to information on welding up crank's.

I have a couple hundred hours on it since I have done it. No issues.

mog, can spray weld be applied to cast-iron thats been gouged/nicked up to fill and then fair smooth for paint? i want something better than bondo/allmetal or jb weld especially near the jaw inserts which i plan on replacing? my thought was spray weld to build up, then machine out old inserts and produce new lands for new inserts. the inserts u see were forge welded in originally. I want to restore this big vise. thanks 4 any help. i guess what i'm asking is how thick can it be applied.

As usual, my experience has varied. . . when I bought the running pony for my D2, the flywheel end main was loose and leaking oil. Investigation showed the crank had been built up and was flaking off. The flakes had destroyed the bearing and seal.End result was having the crank ground and making main bearings. . . just sayin '...

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
