D6c powershift. Shift lever will not stay in detent/gear, it rebounds sharply back to neutral. External linkage is free. Took the top cover off housing, could lever the spools all the way but a lot of spring back pressure. Its right there in front of me but...

Hi, edchief8.
Get your transmission pressures checked. Old Magnet or Edb can likely give you the right figures.

You need over 300psi at the transmission filter (EDB or OM has the proper spec) to be sure the system is anywhere near correct, the first place to check for problems is the suction screens, follow the lines from the pump backwards to find them. There is a square magnetic screen and possibly one in the bottom of the transmission depending on the age of the machine.

To clarify, shift lever is spring load back to neutral. engine running or not. I should be able to easily move lever through the gears, and it will stay where you leave it. Now if you let go of handle its BOIINNG back to N.

Hi, edchief8.
Still do all the checks for lack of pressure - and start with the easy/cheap ones first - like filters and screens, and work your way up from there. That transmission will NOT stay engaged if there is insufficient transmission pressure.

BUTTT, also check the linkage itself. As you say, you should be able to move it any which way through the gears with or without the engine. I don't know what would cause it to jump back to neutral. Tom Madden has a Cat 941B track loader that used to do the same thing. I don't know if it has been 'cured' or not but, if it has, Tom may have a clue or 2 for you.

Look for a plastic water bottle that has fallen down behind the linkage, binding it up. I've seen stranger things.

It's one thing if it's springing back to neutral when it's running as that's a safety feature and it's a tell tale sign that your transmission pressure is low like these other guys are saying. It's another thing if it's doing it when the tractor is not running, and that would seem to be a linkage problem.

I don't know how old this D6C is but the early powershift transmissions would not go into gear without pressure and would shoot the lever back to neutral if pressure dropped. This changed around the mid '60's.

Hi edchief8, I don't know your tractor's serial # so I'm taking a guess, I also have the specs for D6C 73A, 76A, 83A and 96A if needed.
I agree with d9gdon, the linkage seems suspect.
It's a good idea to edit your profile to allow at least your general location to show.

Post the s/n, they don't all run the same pressures.
System pressure below 100psi will kick the shift lever to neutral.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
