Weekend work
Was able to spend some time on the engine today. Removed the fuel system and now the engine will turn over. Will need to disassemble the pump completely and polish it up good. At least it wasn't something broke internally and making it not turn over.Click image for larger version.

Spent some time in the shop this morning. Started to take the fuel system apart to see how bad it was. Stuck racks and that created some issues to get all the pump bodies out, but in the end got all out of the housing and took two apart to see what I have.

[attachment=39493]IMG_20161225_092757787.jpg[/attachment] I had to take the unit apart in the housing so I could get the rack to move so the housing would come out of the pump housing. Even at that they are a close fit to come out.

[attachment=39494]IMG_20161225_104527817.jpg[/attachment] Removed all the pieces and found broken springs in two of them, but after cleaning up the parts the plungers and barrels seem to look in relatively good shape. Used my eye spy and got a 10 plus power look and was pleasantly surprised.

Now to take the camshaft out of the pump housing next. It is stuck to the point it will not turn at all. The lifter assemblies are extremely rusted.

The lifters have a roller retained with a press fit pin. You need to make a support block with a radius to suit the lifter to remove the rollers that are sure to be ruined from rust. New rollers? Got a cylindrical grinder?

Hi Team,
later exhaust valves do not have the thread looking section on their deflectors.
The deflectors deflect the out rushing exhaust gasses from passing up the valve guide/stem clearance.
Oils and metals were not like we have today so this would be an attempt to stop valve stem lube oil carbonizing up and causing sticking valves.

Cat later went on to be a world leader in oil technology, hence the single cylinder Laboratory Test engines that are much sought after, and marketed their own Superior brand of oils to combat carbon deposits, sticking valves and rings--I guess we could say Detergent or Series 3 oils and so on that we have today.

Feel free to add more on this I am no expert on Tribology--study of lubrication.

Can only assume the thread looking section is for cooling the stem due to low quality valve metals and oils of the day.
These engines are the second generation of mobile tractor engines and were at the cutting edge of Diesel engine design and technology for their day.

First generation Diesel engines were in the Diesel 60/65, namely the D9900.
The D9900 Industrial version was current from 1932 to 1934.
The D6100 Industrial version was current from 1933 to 1935.

Well, Dana from Florin Tractor came to the rescue for the springs I needed. Pretty neat stuff, still in the original box!! He was very easy and professional to deal with. I will show some pics of them below.
Same thing happened when I was doing my D17000. I got valves that were still in the cosmoline and original boxes.

Very nice, I always like getting parts from Dana. That stuff packed in cosmolene is really something, a far cry from the plastic baggie we get parts in now.
