Hello, I recently aquired a D4400 20kva gen set. I have it running great and hooked up for backup power to my house and shop. I am wondering what year it was made. I'm assuming late 30's early 40's, but not sure. Its a 3 phase 110/220 volt model. KL is in the serial number which means low voltage. It has the allis type generator head on the engine.
I am wondering if there is a way to put a electric starter on this unit. And I have a few questions: the operation manual shows a starter as an accessory, so does the starter replace the pony motor? It would be nice just to hit a button to engage the starter instead of using the pony motor. The engine only shows 2400 hours, and i'm pretty sure they are original house. It does not leak any fluids, even after i ran it for 3-4 hours under a 60 amp load!! I'm in love with it...
Wondering what starter I would need that would work with this old piece of history? Thanks, John Engelke. 5095540526

Here is a couple more photos I took today. One is a photo of the data plate. ANY information on this old gen set would be great to have, as I am unfamiliar with antique caterpillar equipment. Thanks again. John

Hi John,
welcome! In your first picture, below the pony clutch, is a triangular plate. That's where the electric starter fits. You can't buy OEM anymore but you can make up a starter of the correct configuration using instructions here on forum. Instructions I think are in the second sticky thread listed above. It certainly has all the information for parts required.
Question - what's the pipe tee'd into the exhaust used for?

The T is plumbed into the exhaust, it looks original? Was that way when I got it.

If I was to look and find a starter off of another Caterpillar engine, would it work? I'm sure it would have to be off the same engine, like the 4 cylinder I have. I'm hoping to find a electric starter in a junk yard for old caterpillar equipment. There used to be one locally, not sure if its still there.

What is the engine s/n? Check tag on the block by the run/start lever?
Engine has provision for direct start (see three bolt cover). Starter could be added and would be independent of the pony motor. Original starter would have been an inertia drive type but will also accommodate a later direct mounted solenoid engagement type conversion. Only problem is on these old beasts is they didn't have provision for glow plug heating. Instead they used a direct fired manifold heater.

If I was to put an electric starter on this old gen set, I could still use the pony motor too if I wanted too right? I'm hoping to be able to use either the pony motor, or a electric start. If I can not, I will probably just leave the pony motor to start it. Thanks. John

Is there any information anywhere that the serial number would help identify what year it was made? Or any other information about this unit? Thanks.

What if I was to install some kind of block heater in the cooling system to keep the engine warm, would this help with starting it using a electric starter? Not sure if its worth the trouble, the pony motor works great. But, it would be nice for the wife to be able to start it by just hitting a start button, if it would fire up without the heat of the pony motor....

Close as I can get to build date is 3R1001 started in 1941 and production of the series ended in 1942.
Other D4400 gen sets went on through 1947.
Block heater would help and most likely do the job unless your in really cold weather.
Appears the pony exhaust is teed into the main exhaust.
As I stated the direct electric start would be independent of the pony motor.
