Round Two D2 Transmission Expert Question

More
16 years 6 months ago #14032 by compressor
Been working on the d2 trans all day. It's all but done ,but i have just one more question.
On the front of the transmission there is a pipe type thing that interlocks the detents so when the clutch is pulled back the pipe interlock won't allow the gears ot pop out.
My question is,there are slight ramps on the detents (i am refering to the ones where the springs are)which way do the ramps go front or towards the back.
AS ALWAY'S THANKS ALOT

Should be "V" shaped plungers in "V" shaped detent slots. Doesn't matter which direction they are installed.

OL MAG,
The detents have a machine type angle, ramp on top????
Are you sure it it makes no difference.

I think the detents on my D2 had the little ramps on the tops facing the rear. I remember noting their positions during disassembly, but I don't know how critical it is regarding the direction they are facing. The bores in the detent sleeve face downward when the clutch is disengaged, allowing the detents to pop up into them and then back down again as the gears are shifted. As the clutch is engaged, the detent sleeve rotates the bores forward. This way there is no room for the detents to pop up again, keeping the V shaped plungers in the V shaped slots they are in until the clutch is disengaged again. I might be wrong, but the only reason I can think of to have the detent ramps face rearward is if a detent is not fully down in its V shaped groove the ramp at the rear helps the detent sleeve push it down and out of its bore easier? I might be wrong but that's my best guess.

If you look real close at the parts breakdown there does appear to be a key at the top in the forward position. Is that what you are referring to?

The picture doesn't show the detent top very well, it has a definite taper on one side. I used a mirror and flashlight and looked through the transmission fill hole, both my D2's appear to have the tapers rearward. However, I don't think it is real critical how the detents are installed because if everything is working properly the detent sleeve shouldn't contact the detent tops in that area anyway. I guess you could install two of them facing one direction and the last one facing the other, then you're guaranteed to have at least a couple gears that work-:D

TOBY/OL MAG

Thanks for your input,
you guy's are more than likely right .It probably makes no difference in operation which way they go.
I install them ramps to the rear, so we will see what happens.I should be able to finish this project today sometime.

Boy i'll tell you what, if anyone needs transmission work on a d2,don't call me.
What a pain in the butt.

THANKS AGAIN BOY'S

Looked at a couple of D2 parts tractors but did not disassemble the detent mechanism to have a look at the plunger orientation.....maybe someone has a unit apart that can help determine what is correct.

OL MAG,
I put them towards the back.It seens to run and operate fine.
It's hard sometimes ripping into something for the first time. There are so many things that you should know that the book don't tell you, mine don't anyway.
Like for example, the bottom shaft cover. It will go on four different ways, but it will only work one. Those crasy little detents which way, front or back.It goes on and on. I guess you need to do one and then you'll be alot smarter on the next one, or pay alittle closer attention on how you rip it apart.

OL MAG THANKS ALOT!
