I own a old 916B for over 20 years, knock on wood I have had no issues than the typical maintenance thing. For the past 10 years I only use around the house and snow clearing of my driveway. The other day I was clearing up an area where I split wood and it just started to slip in forward (2nd gear), engine would rev but no movement, shift into 1st gear it move but so slightly, but it will not drive over a 2x4 flat in 1st gear, but there was no issue with reverse. I raised the machine and drained oil, oil looked clean but had a burnt smell too it, (I admit there is a leak in seals so I add fluid often when used), removed oil filter, the drain plug had very small amount of metal sludge, a couple of very small chunks, the filter had no metal filings but looked plugged or heavy amount of sludge. before I take it out I was wondering if anyone had any suggestion as to what to try, look for or do before I remove, I plan on taking an oil sample to Cat for any tell tale signs of problems.

Also anyone have any info on rebuilts for exchange or purchase a used tranny

Serial # 5PC06109

Thanks for any help

Sounds like maybe a stuck valve? Did it work fine then suddenly not at all? That's what it sounds like to me but want to make sure I'm reading it right.

I apologize Victoria 1999, when I got your PM I could not find any info about you on the forum, and I thought it was spam or something. That is why I did not answer you.
I was looking to see where you were from and could not find anything. All I can say again is I am sorry for not responding to you.

does any of your suggestions require the transmission to be removed? or can this be checked without removing, is there certain test that can be preformed prior to removal to detect possible issues

Could be a blown seal in the supply to the forward clutch or seals in the clutch itself.
