Having problem with getting seal between Head and Pony motor to take properly, Bought genuine seal from Cat [3B7978 ] but it isn't the same as the original , They are steel backed , with raised Rubber laminated on both sides ,and Fill the gap fine , but Cats current one is all rubber and only raised on one side to fit into Pony side and is narrower than the Steel one, therefore not sealing against the Head . anyone had this problem ? Thinking of Laminating some Fine Grained cork onto Flat side to Build up width . Anyone any thoughts or Suggestions ? Thanks LJ

What part number did they give you?
Current part number is a 5B7780 with the following manifold modifications. Unfortunately there seems to be at least three versions of that gasket that I know of.

Lance, so is your donk manifold grooved on that face to fit the seal with one raised side, or modified to fit the steel backed seal? Are you wanting/needing to replace the seal without tipping the donk away? If you need the steel backed style, you could make up a steel plate grooved on each side to accept an O ring, or bond some RTV to the plate with the help of a wax mould on the face to form the semi-round.

Lance, you have two choices, get the right seal, or change the manifold to the new type, I had the same problem when I did mine. I have changed to the late stile for others and it fixes the problem! Regards Andrew

Lance, I reckon I have 2 of those older style steel reinforced seals here I bought from Florin Tractor last year that haven't been used, I was going to use them on my D4 2T and D4 7J but ended up using the newer style non steel type successfully on the 2T with Eddie Bedwell's blessing, I still have to refit the head on the 7J diesel, I'll send you one if you would like to try it.

Thank You all for help and Ideas ,I pulled Head and found The new type Seal had a kink on the underside , My Good Mate [an old school Mechanic of More than 50 years] somehow didn't get the Raised Section in the Pony Group quite Right . I had a second Go with same Seal put in with some You Beaut Contact Glue , but I didn't work either , Had ordered 2 New seals from Cat , and my good Wife helped Me Drop Head down after putting plenty Rubber Grease on face of Head under where seal Sits , Perfect seal job!!
Thanks Mike for offer of Double faced Seal , Much appreciated. LJ

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
