D4 2T water temp gauge

Hi Pete, thanks for the update on the gauge project, it sounds like this project has become a major pain in the backside if you require so many different parties to be involved in the supply and assembly, it is interesting to read that Kent Bates thinks the movement could possibly be made in house and might be a more durable product than the modern movement being used currently in the development phase, I remember Byron Heal discussing this topic of having new gauges made a few years ago and he mentioned a very old company in the UK who had been making gauges since the steam engine days of the 1800's though I'm not sure if he had contacted them for a price on our Sylphon style gauges, so many quality manufacturers have closed down these days and sadly it seems 99% of our products now come from China or India.

I took one of my old Sylphon oil gauges to a instrument repair company here in Oz a few years back to talk about refurbishment and they quoted around $500 and that included having the face hand painted, they discussed some people were using stick on decals to create the new faces but found they were not durable in a outdoor tractor environment, here in Oz the sun is a lot fiercer than the USA as we don't have the air pollution so poor quality plastics and paints get hammered in no time.

I used a 200-5222 Cat part No for the 4G,7J and 2T and the length is spot on plus you will need the adaptor for the smaller gauge.

Stewart Warner also makes the larger 2 5/8" diameter gauges:

Thanks for those links Brian, the SW gauge from Summit Racing looks promising, it's too bad that other NOS gauge has a 15 foot long tube because the face looks perfect, I bought the SW "Wings" style oil pressure gauge for my 2 Ton from Summit Racing a couple of years back.

I am also working on a D4 2T and was looking at water temperature gauge options. Mine is a tail seat model so I needed a 7 foot lead to get to the dash which is moved farther to the rear than a standard D4. Most gauges are 5 or 6 foot. I found the Stewart Warner large face gauges at Summit and they had a 12 foot option. With the tail seat I have an enclosed area behind the dash to hide the extra. My plan was to have an adapter ring laser cut to mount the gauge in so it would look like the original flange mount. I also bought a more vintage looking bezel and needle on ebay. I wanted to have a custom face decal made that looks more like the original but never did. Then I found the NOS gauges on ebay and bought one. Here is the picture of the gauges on ebay for those of you interested:

I have some junk gauges that I am planning on using to transplant the correct face into this NOS gauge but I haven't gotten around to that either. The new Stewart Warner gauges have a different range than the originals so putting an old face into the new gauge wasn't going to work, that's why I would have needed a custom decal made. This is what the 2T should have, at least according to the parts catalog:

Good on you Brian for going the extra yard, I sure like that gauge with the 15 foot tube but I just can't hide that extra pipe behind my firewall unfortunately, I'm sure your 2T will look great when you finish her particularly as she is a tail seat, I don't see many of those.

When I put a smaller faced gauge on my D2 I folded the extra along the side of the engine. It is 3 tube lengths along the side. Once it was painted the extra tubing wasn't really noticeable. There is an old thread on here describing how to chill, cut, solder the tubing to the gauge you desire to install.
