4 digit 4d 800g grader engine carb questions.

this carb is on a later 800g grader engine, it looks similar to d2-4 pony carb. it has a breather vent on the bowl, why? did the early d2 and 4's have that vent on their pony carbs. thanks 4 any help.

My 3J D2 has the side vent like that on the bowl. The 5U doesn't. Can you educate me on this grader - where does it fit within Cat's models?

Don't know that I'd call it a vent although it would serve that function if required. More to do with bleeding off high float level fuel. Was used on the early D2,4,6 carbs. Later the filter bleed element was moved to the intake runners in the pony manifold, again supposed to bleed off excessive fuel rather than flood the crankcase. Problem is most all of them had plugged up bleed passages so that didn't work.

That's interesting Pete. Cat: their designers seemed to have the same logic patterns as my kids! I always wondered why there was a "breather" on the intake manifold...
