I need to create a new main bearing oil manifold for my D4 2T as the original has been badly damaged and I have a length of new 3/4" pipe ready to go and the old pipe lined up in a simple jig so when I cut it all apart I get it back to original spacing and alignment, just a quick question on what to use to weld it back together, the original material looks like regular solder but I was wondering if it is actually silver solder, or that I should use silver solder or possibly even bronze rods, can someone please tell me which is correct.
Thanks
Mike

Hi Mike,
I think you will know if Cat used ordinary plumbers low temperature melting point solder when you go to dismantle the manifold section. You could run a file over the solder now and see how hard it may be.
I feel silver solder would have been used originally--does not mean to say it has not been repaired before with soft solder.
My experience of Cat oil lines has been that silver solder is usually used--soft solder will likely fail with the expansion and contraction forces at work.
Others may have other ideas or experience.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

silver solder is the go a lot stronger than bronze and what would have been used to start with speak to your local dunny diver and they should be able to give you the low down as there is different types of silver solder I think black tip is the strongest

I just had a quick look at the Bunnings website, they list 2 different silver solders, a 2% and a 5%, the 2% they call a "yellow amphos", which one is strongest or should I be going to a plumbing shop?
Thanks

Harris staysilv 15 is what I use for refrigeration lines, adapter fittings, Cat fuel valve repair, etc. Easy to use, and flows into capillary spaces well.

Mike I would go to the plumbers aka dunny divers or a fridgey either one will be able to give you the good oil on silver solder types as Stephen says you need one that flows into the capillary spaces well a fridgey may be better than a dunny diver as they us steel lines on a lot of gear and at high pressure as well
I wouldnt waste my time at Bunnings you dont want it comming apart one day and loosing a motor for a few bucks worth of silver solder
Ask Andrew about how he found his old D8 when he bought it

D23j beat me to it but double-check the jig if you haven't already - make sure the jig itself lines up with the holes on the block. Sometimes bent pipes can spring once they're loosened from the block and the jig can end up too short

go for the silver solder as it will make a nice job and seal up well. the bronze would take a little too much heat.

I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
