Last year I bought a used Cat hydraulic push puller and ram built by Power Packer, the Cat part number of the hand pump is 5P-3100, the Power Packer number for the pump is HP9970-91-04, I think it might need a new seal kit put in it because I can't get it to pump past about 35 tons but I can't find any reference to that unit on Google, does anyone have the Cat part number for the kit or even a parts diagram for servicing it, I will need to contact the Cat Dealer here in Australia and the info I have the better, and can you please tell me if that unit is 100 tons or the 60 ton model?
Thanks
Mike

Mike, this supplier has them. Google uses your location when you search, so it won't show up in your area.

http://www.hcrcnow.com/shop/seal-kits/power-packer

It says to call for any models that are not listed, which yours is not, but they have about 50 of those Power Packer models listed.

They're located in southern California, and they ship internationally.

They also list drawings for hydraulic jacks and power units. Power Packer was listed but I didn't see your model, they still may have some kind of drawing for it.

Hi Mike,
Same pump, different part number. Here is how it goes together. Looks like you need a gasket kit and cover gasket.

The rebuild kit should available through Caterpillar, they are easy to rebuild. That pump should be a 10,000 psi model and used on all the Cat and other brand rams that are rated for 10,000 psi, from the 15 ton to the 100 ton units and others.

Thankyou everyone for your expert advice, our Aussie Expert Eddie Bedwell has suggested it might just need the pressure relief valve turning up and I hope it is that simple but the first time I tried it no matter how fast I pumped I could only get the pressure up to around 35 tons and it would slip back to about 25 tons and hold it overnight, the next day I got it up to around 40 tons and it would hold about 30 but it would not go any further and I suspect it is pulling air in past the piston.

My local Cat Parts guy is a real nice fella but he has never seen a D2 or D4 so I was hoping to get the Cat part number of the seal kit.
Many thanks
Mike

I hope it is that simple Pete, I doubt it had been used for 20 years before I bought it and with Eddies help last year we gave it a internal clean and oil change, from memory it was pretty clean internally but I've just printed off your parts scan for reference though I notice that sheet doesn't show the location or part numbers for the seals.
Regards
Mike

Mike the ton rating has nothing to do with the pump, if you are making psi the ram will give you tons so the bigger the ram the more tons. I had a lot of trouble with those pump units at the dealer over ther border. The old type units gave no trouble, the round ones would work fine at home but when you got to the job they would play up. One of those pumps made me work out how to change sprocket rings without taking them off the tractor. I drove 2 hours on dirt roads to get to a D6 that the customer had stripped down for me to pull the sprockets and when I was set up and tried to pull the pump would only go about half the psi needed to remove them. After looking into the pump with unhappy customer there desided to cut and weld on the tractor.

Morning Andrew, interesting hearing about your experience with those pumps, there must have been a reason for them playing up, I need to pull a few sprockets so I've got to get it to work.

I'd be suspect of that ball check valve between the low pressure piston chamber and the high pressure discharge. The part that doesn't have a part number ???. Could be either ball check not holding, the lowest one would be more likely to catch crud or corrode.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
