We were doing a paving Job in the mountain community of Painted Cave near Santa Barbara California when I came across this machine. The owner wanted it gone so I added it to my collection. Any ideas why a Cletrac would have a Holt blade? Maybe taken off earlier machine? I am not sure what model the Cletrac is. It has a Hercules diesel. Injectors go into side of block. it has an open threaded port in the head for each cylinder that I do not know what it is for. machine has not run in 30 years and dead axle is broken but owner had a spare he gave me.

Pete

Looks like BD model, four cylinder? I believe the ports may have been for spark plugs for gas engine. The blade looks like it was made for the tractor. Nice little tractor. I have a 1950 BGS, gas engine, bare tractor with pto.

Pete, are you sure that's a diesel? The injectors(?) are too far down in the cyl and the injector lines seem to big to support the high pressure of diesel injection.

Very interesting!!:fish2:

It was common for Cletrac to use the Holt blades.
That looks like an AD model to me. The B model had wider spokes in the sprocket. I don't recall those big threaded holes in the head. I'll have to look again at mine to see if they are there.

Yes it is a 4 cylinder diesel, Bosch injector pump with Timken governor 2 battery boxes but not sure if it was 24v or 12v.
So when did Holt quit making blades? It's a clean install pump runs off crank and has ripper pockets in front corners.
Anybody know what year this machine may be?
Planning to steam clean it all tags are encrusted with patina.
looks to have hydraulic track adjusters.
I believe it does not have steering clutches, differential steer like the oc3 I have.

Here are a couple more pics including loading it.
There is a shot of the engine with injector pump. I need to study the engine some more but it is strange the injectors go I. Side of block. There mustne a port to a precombustion chamber in the head possibly??

Those look like Ricardo-style injectors / pre combustion chambers - well-known in English circles. Nice unit with an OEM-looking blade and PTO. Looking forward to the video of the first start! : )

Yes, it's a Diesel. that's a Lanova head, also used by Buda, & called Buda-Lanova. I believe Waukesha used it on some engines too...
The injector sprays across the top of the piston into a precombustion chamber on the other side.
the threaded holes I have no idea on...I've seen a couple Oliver crawlers with Herc engine, but don't remember that.

Oliver made low pressure diesel with funny port things on 6 cylinder little agg model I dont remember what the model designation it was
It was low compression from new and and it had a funny port cast into the head that the combustion process took place in the fuel ignited in the head and not in the cylinder

When I first got married I leased a sheep farm in steep country and it came with one of these crawlers hard to start and it had differential steering like a Fowler or a Track Marshall

I never saw inside the head but thats how the owners described it me

I would guess it was 50 hp max

Paul

as a side note the owner thought it was the best thing sliced bread he had a thing for Oliver crawlers he had a old D7 3T that ran fine radiator leaked like a sieve but told me I could have it if I could find him a OC 18 or maybe that was a OC 16 dunno what ever there big Oliver crawler was searched as hard as I could never found what he wanted but couldnt believe anyone would swap a D7 3T with good walking gear for a Oliver

AD came with a Hercules DOOC diesel engine.Should be a tag on the firewall with serial no.Cletrac.org has a list of serial nos.to tell year. HP was about 30.

I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
