These are invoices of a D7 3T purchase and trade-in transaction that my father made in 1958. I operated 3T 24296, it was equipped with a hydraulically controlled angle blade.
I did some research to provide perspective for the prices listed; Ford Motor Co. M.S.R.P. for the 1958 Thunderbird convertible was $3,930 and the average price of a gallon of gasoline in the U.S.A. was $0.25 a gallon. The $13,000 price listed on the invoice would have paid for 3 new Thunderbird convertibles ($11,790) with $1,210 left over for gasoline (a little over 1,600 gallons for each car).

What was the D7 3T traded for another new 3T or was the 17A all ready out?

Very interesting comparison.

A friend had just bought a in New Holland Fiat crawler for vineyard work, and someone on here had a receipt or the MSRP posted for a D2 from the day.Doing some research on inflation in the years in between the NH was only several thousand more, and almost twice the engine horse power. The owner laughs that it will not till more acres per hour than the IH TD6 it is replacing because it has no more weight. But does have 3 hydraulic valves,PTO, and 3 point hutch that D2 didn't.

The new to the purchaser 3T-D7 was five years old in 1958 when purchased. It was a 1953 model according to serial number. The 3T-D7 traded in for $5500.00 was a 1959 model. So in reality a 5 year old Cat was close in price to 3 new Thunderbirds.

Hey OldIronHabit,

Your post didn't make sense to me. Is there a typo? A 9xxx is newer than a 24xxx??? Doesn't add up.

What would that interest charge have been for? It didn't look like it was a hire purchase as I didn't see a term but maybe I missed that? Maybe it's the Cat dealer passing on the interest charge he paid for having the new tractor in stock?

Glen, Buddy, 9715 is lower than 24296 even in Minnesota. The machine he bought on November 29, 1958 was serial number 3T-24296 which shows in the Track-Type-Machines book to be a 1953. The trade in 3T-9715 shows to be a 1949 model. Sounds like a 5 year old used machine was equal to the price of 3-1/2 new Thunderbirds.

PS. We all get plenty of brain farts as we get older. LOL. At least I do.

My guess would be that the dealer or Caterpillar financed the machine. I got copies of the original order form, delivery date, and purchase paperwork for my 1937 Model 11 grader. It has a sheet that shows the amount of each payment, the due dates, and then the final payment.

According to the Ford website the new 2016 T-birds run from the low 30s to the upper $50,000.00 range depending on how it was specified. Don't know what a new 7 costs.

Yep,
Thought it was a typo, '59 turned out to be a '49. Wish I could get 10 years younger with snapping a finger...

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
